Tupac - California Love

Artist: Tupac
Song: California Love
Album: Single (1996)
Genre: Rap, Hip Hop

Woo, it's a bad night y'all, this is gonna be a little half effort.  I'll make up for it with the album review this weekend (that you should totally vote for here)

Music video trivia!  There's some stories that, while filming this video and scouting locations, Dr. Dre came across Burning Man.  There's letters and stuff where the experience was talked about.  This is FALSE, the letters are fake, dude hadn't even heard about it till the last 10 or so years.

I've had problems finding albums of Tupac's on Spotify.  I've realized that's probably because a lot of his music was released as singles and not albums, so most of what you find in the early ages are Greatest Hits and the like.

Simon Viklund - The Mark

Artist: Simon Viklund
Song: The Mark
Album: Payday 2 Remaster (Official Soundtrack), Vol 1 (2016)
Genre: Electronic

I was thinking through what video game soundtrack sticks with me nearly as much as Hotline Miami, and I'm appalled to realize I didn't even think of Payday 2 until I got home tonight.

Payday 2 and Hotline Miami hold my top soundtrack spot for similar, yet different, reasons.

While Hotline's soundtrack is built to keep tension high the whole time and drive the action, Payday 2 has, by necessity, a different feel.

Payday 2 has down moments.  The heists you can run have both loud and quiet options, and the soundtrack songs reflect that.  In the beginning of this track you have a wonderful low, almost calm section.  There's underlying tension, but not any more than you would get from any song set under the kind of stuff you'd do in the game.  However, once the heist goes loud you get treated to the latter half of the song, which has one of my favorite drops on par with that cut out from the Doom song I posted a couple days back.

Huge props to Simon Viklund, the mastermind behind most of the songs that the Payday soundtrack was graced with.  He helped craft such a fantastic atmosphere that just can't be beat.  When it comes to shooters Payday 2 is my favorite, and most of that comes from the bombtastic music.

Honestly it was a tossup between this song and Razormind.  Both are fantastic, but when I asked Google to flip a coin I got heads, which I had assigned to The Mark obviously enough.

Check out Razormind anyway though, it's really good as well.

NF - Green Lights

Artist: NF
Song: Green Lights
Album: Perception (2017)
Genre: Rap, Hip Hop

The hot thing in Christian Rap, NF is a rapper that actually sounds good.  The fact that I have to specify this is depressing, but if you're familiar with my distaste for the tendency for Christians to accept sub-par media because that's just the precedent at this point, you probably get this.

He's on a roll releasing a lot of good music, so I hope you have fun checking out what he has to offer, or not.  Rap isn't everybody's thing, so I get if you'd skip.

Carpenter Brut - Le Perv

Artist: Carpenter Brut
Song: Le Perv
Album: EP 1 (2014)
Genre: Dark Synthwave
Bandcamp: carpenterbrut.bandcamp.com

So pretty much nobody comments on this blog, and I'm totally fine with that.  I'd love to talk, but I also almost never comment on blogs myself so I totally understand.

One guy who does though is Roland Clarke, who mentioned that, as gamers, we get introduced to some bomb soundtracks.  Personally, I couldn't agree more, and after I read that I was thinking about what game I could feature next in the music department.

I can't believe it took me a whole day to remember Hotline Miami.  This game has what is probably my favorite soundtrack I've ever heard.  While they didn't compose any of the songs originally for the game (except the title tracks), the songs set the stage for the game in a wonderful way.  If you haven't heard of the game, I'd advise you check out the game either yourself or in videos.  This one and this one are decent gameplay examples, with the second one really highlighting the tense atmosphere the soundtrack can add.

100% gigantic fan of the game, and the soundtrack is to die for.  I used to make everybody at work listen to it for hours on end.  In hind site, kinda a dick move, but I was point in the kitchen at the time, so I got to make calls like that.

Sum 41 - The Hell Song

Band: Sum 41
Song: The Hell Song
Album: Does This Look Infected? (2002)
Genre: Punk Rock

HEY!  Vote in my poll here!  It'll decide which album I talk about first, so I'd love everybody's input.

So Sum 41 is a band I never really listened to for whatever reason.  I feel like because they were a band who's name I actually recognized I assumed they were a band for emo kids.  My view of bands and music was hella weird back in the day you see.

They're not bad though, I'm really happy to have them on my Punk playlist.  They have some great energy and feel really familiar to me, so I probably heard them at least a little bit way back when.

Mick Gordon - Hellwalker

Artist: Mick Gordon
Song: Hellwalker
Album: Doom (Original Game Soundtrack, 2016)
Genre: Metal

There's a break at 2:08 that 's straight up what I love for in music, my goodness.

So Doom.  I'm sure that anybody even six years older than me probably remembers when Doom first made a splash in the gaming scene.  I was pretty oblivious back then as a literal 4 month old child, but that's to be expected.  I did however get to be around when the newest one came out, and hoo boy was that a time.

People talking about how violent it was, and acting like Doom didn't have a precedence for that way back in the day.  Man, it was a cool time.  Also my gaming friends who bought the game (I haven't yet myself) that let me play so I could hear the bomb soundtrack it has.

I feel like Doom is the shooter that needs to exist.  It's literally the mindless shooting game that movies and the media try to demonize.  Personally, I love what it has going on.  It has just as much story to it as you want it to (highlighted where you can literally punch the computer giving you exposition to move on quicker), and it's just you and your guns against the powers of hell.  It's great honestly, there's no ambiguity about who the bad guys are since the opposition are crazy monsters that are still the OG designs from the 90s that are literal hell spawn.

But yeah, the soundtrack is straight fantastic.  Take a listen at least for the break I mentioned, it's super cool.

Dropkick Murphys - The State Of Massachusetts

Band: Dropkick Murphys
Song: The State Of Massachusetts
Album: The Meanest Of Times (2007)
Genre: Punk Rock

So I'm slowly getting more familiar with how RSS feeds work.  Squarespace has a lot of information on it, and YouTube is filled with some great informative stuff that helps me get different explanations on it.  If all goes well I think I can even get on Apple Podcasts, so life is pretty good on the podcast front.  Even have a logo worked up, which I'm rather happy with.  Check it y'all, it's really decent.

I figured for today we'd listen to some of the melodious tones of Dropkick Murphys.  Every time I give them a listen I fall in love a little bit more, so I hope you can enjoy them as much as I do.  It's a nifty Irish feeling these guys bring to their Boston selves, so I'd recommend checking it out.

Stone Sour - Tired

Band: Stone Sour
Song: Tired
Album: House Of Gold & Bones Part 1
Genre: Hard Rock, Metal

I'll be honest, I chose this song because it's 3:33 in the morning and I'm tired.  I've been putting time into figuring out what an RSS feed is and working on podcast episodes, which has been keeping me up a little bit.  It'll be great when it's finally done, but my goodness it's rough right now.  So yeah, check out my website from time to time to see if we can manage to get this podcast off the ground, yeah?  #SupportMe

It's a really good song though.  It really highlights the Alice in Chains influence that members of Stone Sour have in their music.  Like, that riff is straight up lifted from some AiC song, I know it.  I love it though, seeing they're one of my favorite bands.  Anything that mimics that flavor of grunge is cool with me.

Talking Heads - Burning Down The House

Band: Talking Heads
Song: Burning Down The House
Album: Speaking In Tongues (1983)
Genre: New Wave

I feel like I told this story before, but it's a really good one, so I'll tell it again.

I once had a dream that I was helping David Byrne of Talking Heads make an art film.  We were in a gigantic warehouse that was painted flat gray.  There were large geometric shapes (pyramids, cubes, spheres, etc.) everywhere, but there were minimal shadows.  I don't know anything about what the movie was suppose to be, outside of the fact that my job was to get Eminem to recite free verse poetry in the middle of the room.

Eminem either didn't want to do this or wasn't doing it right, so for the rest of the dream I had to try and convince him to do what David wanted him to.  It was honestly really stressful, I wasn't a fan.

So yeah, hope you like this song and the fun story about my dream.
