Lacey Sturm - I'm Not Laughing

Artist:  Lacey Sturm
Genre:  Post Grunge

This song makes me very happy because of one thing.  The sound I always loved about Flyleaf is finally back!

To preface this, the sound I always associated with Flyleaf was always the sound of just one of their songs really, "I'm So Sick".  This song didn't really sum up their actual sound, but it was the direction I always hoped they would go more.  Well as their albums went on the music started to go more and more in a direction that I personally didn't care for as much.  It was good and all, but I really just didn't like it as much, ya know?

Well I was helping a friend of mine write up some basic music stuff for a song she wrote and she said she wanted to make it sound a little like this song.  I hadn't heard any of Lacey's new material yet so I gave it a quick look up and really fell in love with it.

Honestly the song reminds me a little of a song called "Miss Murder".  I only remember that song from Guitar Hero though, so my memory might not be the greatest regarding it.

Still though, this song is great and you should enjoy it, eh?

Zardonic - Restless Slumber (remix)

Artist:  Zardonic
Genre:  Drum and Bass, Industrial

Carach Angren shared this guy's post with them while I was doing my top 10 list, so I didn't get to show him to you sooner.  I just discovered him though and he's possibly my favorite DJ right now.

He's got this really cool Metal edge to what he does and there's even some screaming that goes down on a decent number of his tracks.

This is the first song of his I heard though, so I thought this would be a good one to share, ya dig?

Enjoy.

Willie Nelson - On The Road Again

Artist:  Willie Nelson
Genre:  Outlaw Country

I just heard that the American Flag, Girl Scout Cookies, and Willie Nelson were the 3 pillars of being American, so here's a Willie Nelson song.

I don't listen to Mr Willie, but I'm sure you all will enjoy this as much as I kinda am.  I think I've probably heard this song before honestly, cause I know I've heard of it at the very least.

Lamb Of God - Laid To Rest

Band:  Lamb Of God
Genre:  Groove Metal, Metalcore, Thrash Metal
Language:  Strong (censored)

And at long last we finally get to the last band of my top 10 list.

Like I said before, this list was in no particular order which is why there were some of the heavier bands earlier in the list as well as later on.  I didn't really want to rate them all like that, but if you want me to I can link to a Spotify playlist with them in what I would consider to be a decently good order.

I didn't know if I would include these guys on my list or not honestly because while they're heavy enough, I feel like a lot of people don't think of them that way.  They don't tune low so they can't cheat that way, and they don't play slow to create the impression of heaviness there either.

But despite these facts I added them because they qualify, in my opinion, to be on this list.

Listen to the breakdown in this song.  It's one note.  Just one note repeated for like 20 seconds or whatever.  Most times I would say that that's a really boring breakdown (like this) but these guys manage to not only pull it off, but keep the rest of their material to the same level.

I also absolutely love Randy Blythe's vocal work.  He's a freaking beast and a huge inspiration to me.  I know I'm not likely to ever be able to sound like him, but it's a goal anyway.

Enjoy the last song of the Top 10 Heaviest list, Laid To Rest.

Impending Doom - My Own Maker

Band:  Impending Doom
Genre:  Deathcore

So here's another Deathcore band.  Like I said before I really did try to avoid them just because the whole schtick of Deathcore is to have a really loud, low, crushing sound and if I really wanted to I could probably justify more than half this list being filled with them.

I didn't do that though, I gave you variety.  Worship me.

Get it?  It's funny cause I'm calling this a variety even though I'm sure most of you all just are listening to this thinking, "Wow, htis all sounds the same.  And it sucks."

I can live with this though.

One of the things that's cool about this song is the high lead just kinda there to remind you how much lower the rest of it is.  Also this is one of my favorite bands, hence getting their logo tattooed on my body.

Portal Ω Curtain

Band:  Portal Ω
Genre:  Death Metal, Extreme Metal

I  posted this song a while ago, but I just couldn't resist popping my favorite clock headed band in my top 10 list.

This song is a nightmare of noise.  I wouldn't say that automatically qualifies it for top 10 status though, so you've gotta go deeper.

The music itself just sounds oppressively evil in a way that's hard to explain.  The video lends to it, sure, but it's more than that.  The deep sounds that it has, the growling, the minor key, it all lends to a song that's just crushingly depressing in a wonderful way.

Please enjoy Portal.

Meshuggah - Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion

Band:  Meshuggah
Genre:  Djent, Progressive Metal

Other than having an absurdly long title this song is also really heavy.  Meshuggah is a bit of a front runner in really low tunings, way back in the day they got the some of the earlier 7 string guitars.

In their quest to tune lower they also have managed to gain a place in almost everybody's heaviest band lists.  I tried to avoid doing that with my choices and more going with personal opinion, but there's some people I can't ignore.  Almost everybody has Sunn O))) on their list, but I honestly thing that their heaviness aspect come's more from their shows that are loud enough to demolish buildings more than the actual music.  It's a little too stripped down to make my list for me.

Meshuggah on the other hand has earned their spot, and they shall have it.

Job for A Cowboy - Entombment Of A Machine

Band:  Job For A Cowboy
Genre:  Death Metal, Technical Death Metal

So these guys were kinda an early Deathcore band, but not really.  The lines between their music and the Deathcore scene at the time were a little blurred, but once they put out a full album they switched fully to Death Metal.

Hands down the coolest part of this song is a break in the beginning where the song cuts and there's just this high scream.  When they play it live they get the whole crowd to do it and it's legitimatly jaw dropping to see them pull it off.

There's other really cool parts to the song as well, but that's the one that stands out to me the most.

Bloodbath - So You Die

Band:  Bloodbath
Genre:  Death Metal
Language:  Once, Strong

As far as Metal goes, there's a really huge selection of bands that vary in how heavy they are vs how musically talented they sound.

Deathcore for example has huge breakdowns that will crush your soul with the build and drop if done properly, but a lot of people complain that their use of low guitar tunings is all that they really have going.

Then you have Death Metal bands like Cannibal Corpse who are at the top of a lot of people's "heaviest bands" list with their guitars tuned only a half step down from your standard tuning.

When it comes down to it you can only BS your way so far with low tunings to fake heavy music before you get shown up by a song that's just well executed.

Here though is a wonderful example of both low tunings and great execution.

I love how the guitars sound here, they have a really dirty tone going on that is so abrasive it's beautiful mixing with one of the most crushingly brutal vocalists ever to enter the game.

It's fast paced, it's heavy, and it's brutal.  All the things that people want from a Death Metal song.

Hey look, probably the longest post I've written in a while.

Septicflesh - Titan

Band:  Septicflesh (Septic Flesh)
Genre:  Symphonic Death Metal

These guys may not seem as heavy as some of the other bands I've already posted, but I assure you they have their moments.  I'm sure you're wondering how I could possible count them here since they have that backing symphony (the Prague Philharmonic), but I assure you they manage to hold their own place with the rest of this list.

The thing I love most about this song is the stark contrast between the choir and the harsh vocals and the symphony and the guitars.  It's really quite cool to listen to, so even if you don't want to listen to any of the rest of this week check out this song.  Or even this song.

Black Tongue - In The Wake Ov The Wolf

Band:  Black Tongue
Genre:  Deathcore (Doomcore)

I wasn't sure if I should include these guys or not since it's another Deathcore band and I've got another one I'm gonna be posting too, but I couldn't resist how crushingly heavy these guys sound is.

They play in a stupidly low tuning that makes all of their already heavy music just sound a lot heavier.  It's all big and Doom-y sounding so a lot of people call them Doomcore.  Honestly they're mostly just Deathcore, but you can call them whatever you want I suppose.

Day 3 of this, how ya'll fairing?

Party Cannon - Tyrone, You Put That Sugar Down

Band:  Party Cannon
Genre:  Slam Death

You can't tell me that this isn't one of the best covers to an album ever.  It's freaking hilarious.

So this is a Slam Death band called Party Cannon (as I'm sure you could figure out) from Scotland.  Their music is so freaking nasty that I couldn't help but put them on the list, ya know?  It's heavy, it's noisy, it's just really great all around.

Hope you like it, but I bet you won't, haha

Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague

Band:  Cannibal Corpse
Genre:  Death Metal

Hey, it's time for our Top 10 Heaviest list!

Now I'm gonna disclaimer before this starts, this is all personal opinion.  If I stayed in certain genres I could find heavier stuff than this, but this is limited to the stuff that I listen to for the most part, so we'll have to deal, eh?

There's no particular order to this list since there were a couple that I couldn't decide on their place in the cue, so I'm just gonna throw 10 bands at you and you can pick what you think the order should be.

So Cannibal Corpse.  Not too many ways you can argue about these guys being heavy as all crap, right?  They have a pretty crushing sound and they don't even down tune their guitars that much like a lot of the other bands on this list do.  I hope you enjoy this song and list, cause it only get's better (personal opinion) from here.

Remco Hendrix - Funk Bass Thumb & Fingerstyle Grooves

Artist:  Remco Hendrix
Genre:  Bass Groove

I will admit that I've never heard this dude's music until Sunday afternoon, but once I had I knew I had to share it with you.

A week or so ago a friend of mine tried to tell me that you couldn't have music that was built around just the bass or drums because they were filler instruments.  Obviously I knew this was wrong but I wasn't sure how to show I was right either till I found this guy.

It's some really good music that you can't possibly have an objection too, so go ahead and give it a listen.

Timothy Brindle - Sacrifice Of Worship

Artist:  Timothy Brindle
Genre:  Rap

Yesterday was Valentine's Day, and while I didn't actually do anything special I did get a selfie with my tech team from church in the morning!

My eyes in this picture legitimately frighten me, but that's ok I suppose...

Hey though, since I'm already talking about church I may as well use a Christian Rapper as my music for today.

It's a good song and feels a lot like some of Dre's old material, so I hope you like it!  The video quality is pretty terrible, so I'd advise checking it out on Spotify or something, but that's just me.

Twenty One Pilots - HeavyDirtySoul

Band:  Twenty One Pilots
Genre:  Alternative Hip Hop

Yeah, gotta love these guys.  Basically the biggest thing to hit music in the last couple years actually, they've really blown up the airwaves for quite a while now.

They've got a really interesting sound honestly, they rap, they sing, they scream, they have timpanys, they have ukuleles, they have anything you can think of basically.  I dunno, they aren't too bad really.

As far as my exposure to them goes I got introduced to them while I was talking to a guy about Metal bands.  He had just found these guys and was all like "Dude, this is the best music you'll ever hear!"  Only issue is that, since we were talking about Metal bands at the time, I really didn't like them at all.

You know what though?  Check them out, they're good.

Fall Out Boy - Centuries

Band:  Fall Out Boy (FOB)
Genre:  Rock

Hey, I saw Deadpool on Thursday!  The only reason I didn't tell you is because Friday's post was written on Thursday before I saw the movie.

Movie wise it was basically everything I could have wanted in a Deadpool movie.  It was really good actually which is something I was really concerned about working out.

I'm posting this song because my sister is blasting them and I can't really think of anything else right now.

Dr. Dre - Forgot About Dre

Artist:  Dr. Dre & Eminem
Genre:  Rap

Started listening to this again recently because it's just a really solid song.  I get if you don't like Rap music at all because there's a reasonable amount of offensive content across the board.  Still though, some of Dre's beats (ha, Beats by Dre...) on this album still manage to hold up.  The style has changed and all, but as a whole it's not like it's something that couldn't be released today for the most part.

Panic! At The Disco - Victorious

Band:  Panic! At The Disco
Genre:  Alternative Rock

My sister reminded me last night that I had this song written on the back of my hand for whatever reason.  I don't remember why I had written this song on my hand because I don't remember where I would have heard the song that I actually would get the name of it either.

I suppose that's not too important, the song is really catchy and stuff and that's what really counts.

Bethel Music - To Our God

Band:  Bethel Music
Genre:  Praise & Worship

I'm giving you this to listen to because we played it at church recently.  It's one of my favorite songs to play because the way we do it makes it a load of fun.  I can't really say that I'm very familiar with the original other than the basic flow of the song because whenever we play it it get's a bit of each musician's flavor to it.  When me and my brother play it, especially with one of the drummers we occasionally play with, give the chorus a little bit of a Metal edge.  So much freaking fun.

Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly

Band:  Foo Fighters
Genre:  Rock

Guess what guys, guess what!  My top 10 list is (still) almost done!

Had a lot of fun at my Superbowl party the other night.  My friend accidentally drank way too fast and ended up laying on his bed making faces at the ceiling around the 3rd quarter so I went home, haha

The halftime show sucked though, for real.  Didn't like it at all, and it's not just because I generally dislike Coldplay, the show was just garbage.

In honor of garbage show, here's some nice middle of the road Rock music.  Enjoy!

Godsmack - I Stand Alone

Band:  Godsmack
Genre:  Heavy Metal

The lead singer of Godsmack, Sully Erna, had his birthday yesterday.  The Superbowl was also yesterday.

Sully's birthday was the reason that I picked this song though, even though I'm sure that after I watch the Bowl that it will inspire a great many things as well.

Writing this before I get to watch anything, so we'll see which team I'm rooting for and which one wins, eh?

Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al

Artist:  Paul Simon
Genre:  Pop

The first time I consciously listened to Paul Simon was after my boss told me to check out his stuff.  Not really thinking I just went and dropped $20 on a greatest hits album.  This was a very significant amount of money for me at the time since I only made $7.25 an hour and worked less than 20 hours a week.

I enjoyed the music well enough and it turns out I was familiar with a few of the songs, but the fact remains that it was a really dumb purchase.  Since then I don't think I've actually listened to album honestly, so there's that.

Megadrive - Slum Lord

Artist:  Megadrive
Genre:  Synthwave, Dark Electronic

This is possibly my favorite song from the Hotline Miami soundtrack.  It's really really really a song you need in your life.

This song was for a specific character in the game who was a detective that was slowly starting to lose it.  As the game went on he became more and more unhinged in his quest to find the elusive Miami Mutilator.
It was probably the best storyline in a game that really let's you put all the pieces together yourself.

The artist however makes some really killer music for what it's worth.  If you're into this stuff I'd advise checking out more of his material.

Eminem - The Way I Am

Artist:  Eminem
Genre:  Hip Hop, Rap

This is one of my favorite songs off of this album.  The album was really solid all songs considered, but this is one of my top 5 at least.

There's a remix out there with Marilyn Manson on it and it's honestly freaking fantastic, but this is the traditional mix and it just makes sense to me to display it first, ya know?

Top 10 heavy songs/bands coming soon by the way, don't forget, haha

Lil Wayne - 6 Foot 7 Foot

Artist:  Lil Wayne
Genre:  Rap
Language:  Strong

This was my first experience with Lil Wayne in his own material and I really liked it.  He's got a pile of really decent lines in it too that make me laugh.

One of my favorites though is one that I told my brother.  "Married to the money, f*ck the world, that's adultery."  It amused me a lot so I told him but he decided to take it down the punk rock path.  If you're a true anarchist then you're all like "yeah, f*ck the world man!", but if you're in it for the money then that kind of attitude really doesn't make much ca$h dolla', ya dig?

I also like the line "Real Gs move in silence like lasagna".  Get it?  Cause the letter G is silent in lasagna?

Anyway, this song is a lot more chill that what's comin' to ya, so enjoy while it lasts, haha.

Aerosmith - Love In An Elevator

Band:  Aerosmith
Genre:  Classic Rock

As someone who never really got into Aerosmith I have a very small selection of songs of theirs that I like.  Because of this I'm mostly familiar with the material on their greatest hits album so all I have is the tuff a lot of people know.  I still like the stuff I know though, so that's what counts.

It's a fun song though, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

The Killers - Mr Brightside

Band:  The Killers
Genre:  Alternative Rock

In a few days I'm gonna be hitting you with some heavy music (a top 10 list actually) in about a week, so I'm gonna do a couple more chiller songs till then.

I know a lot of people that hate The Killers but I've never really had that big an issue with them.  I actually really like their stuff that I'm familiar with, so I'll share one of their tunes with ya.

Monday, February 1, 2016

Bongripper - Her Highness

Band:  Bongripper
Genre:  Doom Metal, Stoner Metal

Hey look, it's another big super heavy band to chill to!

While this is called Doom Metal, this is also a style of music called Stoner Metal.  However this is not something to listen to when you're stoned as it will probably give you what the boys in the business call a "bad trip".

You like how I put quotations there to sound really out of touch?

Hey though, big loud music, loads of fun.

Side note, the picture that I chose to represent the group?  That's one of the patches that they sell to sew on jackets.  It's rather big, made for the back of your jacket.  My brother has it and it looks sweet.
