We're gonna double down today and do a band and song that start with Q. An 8 minute song no less.
For the last few years I've managed to pull a band out of the air by using the almighty Google. "Bands that start with..." filling in with the weird letters was my most searched stuff in the month of April last year.
I'll be honest though, I've got no clue about who this band is. They're a Black Metal act that were formed in the US, so that's a little bit of a fun thing. I would say it's cool that they managed to take off, but seeing as a misfiling of some work by Bach is overriding any of their song's plays they are clearly the most underground band I'm going to share this month.
Of course, if you're a real Black Metal fan you'll know that the more underground a band is the better they are. If they have digital distribution, they're too popular. If they have CDs they're too popular. They're borderline too popular if they have cassettes. If you aren't listening to the band in a Norwegian ice cave off a gramophone, you're probably a poser.
Luckily for me, I'm totally a Black Metal poser and am fine with listening to them online and stuff. I'll be honest, there's some people that get legitimately angry when people try to bring attention to underground bands. The Black Metal (and generally the Metal community to a lesser extent) get really worked up about for some reason.
I suppose this post is way more about people overreacting in BM culture than anything else, but that's ok. Now you know, eh?

Honestly, I wasn't super sure how I was gonna beat the lineup from last year's week, but I think we've managed to equal the quality of bands once again this time around.
Cause really, what's more evil than a band that sings about not only Satan, but nazis too?
Meet Marduk. A little trivia on them, Marduk is the name of an ancient Babylonian god, associated with water, vegetation, judgement, and magic. Mythologically, it seems like Marduk wasn't a very nice person.
The band are, unsurprisingly, also not nice people, actually setting out to be "the most blasphemous band in the world" according to founding member Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson. With heavily anti religious themes to their music in addition to the traditional satanic swing most Black Metal bands fall on, we get a little something special with Marduk. That something special is support of the Third Reich.
I suppose you could kinda look at it from the light of Slayer's Angel Of Death in which it's a tale of horrific things but it doesn't endorse it, but that'd be inaccurate in this case. Various members of the band are annoyed about the Nazi allegations, but the founder of the band has also said that he's proud his grandfather served in the German military in WWII. It's little things here and there that just open up a lot of what they say to some scrutiny. Check out this interview if you're interested in digging a little more into the mind of Morgan. It's a good read, but outside of him saying things about being annoyed about being associated with racism and such, not straight up disavowing connection.
But the main takeaway from the interview you should get is their devoutness to the Black Metal scene.
Morgan has a lot of thoughts about bands who call themselves Black Metal but don't deal directly with Satan and anti-religious themes. "It should be, otherwise it isn’t black metal. For me it’s strange to see all these bands that say that “Oh, we are kind of black metal” just because they sound in a specific way or have a specific type of vocals while singing about dragons or whatever; for me that is not black metal. As you can see, Morgan really couldn't care less about the vocal style, music style, or anything like that, as long as they deal with Satanism as a whole. He's fine with direct or philosophical connection, it just has to be there. Somewhere in that interview he even mentions that even lighter Psychedelic Rock stuff can be Black Metal associated as long as it has the central theme.
Fascination with dark points of history or not, these are some nasty people. They do make a heavy commitment to quality music, insane amounts of energy, and staying true to their message. Kinda like Watain last year actually. So yeah, here's Watain's equal in my mind, have fun with it.
Band: Behemoth

Genre: Blackened Death Metal
Honestly, I love quotable people who commit to their art. If the frontman of Behemoth, Nergal, is anything, he is quotable. Other than getting me in some trouble with people who need to mind their own business, the man has done a pile of interesting things. Unlike Watain who actually spray pigs blood on people as their shows go on, Behemoth takes a more artistic step.
Full costume is one thing they manage to do well. While corpse paint is a very traditional move in the Black Metal community, other things are not so much. Robes, face paint, and stage names? Good deal Behemoth.
Then there's the stage show. While they may not have crucified people on stage like Gorgoroth, and they don't douse the crowd with blood, they have ripped up a bible on stage while on stage in Poland while calling the catholic church "The most murderous cult on the planet". So yeah, not too cool, eh?
Firstly, I wanna point out that this is a free speech thing. I feel it was in poor taste, but I don't feel it should have hit courts like it did. That's just me though, feel free to hold your own opinion.
But yeah, that's the tip of the iceberg for our good buddy Nergal. Outside of saying things like "Satan is the only important thing in my life (paraphrased)" and other such things, he's actually a cancer survivor as well. You know how some people get cured from some horrific disease and they find faith or something? Well Nergal doesn't seem to feel that way.

Enough of me making assumptions about people's personal life, let's stick to the music.
Behemoth started out as a heavily pagan metal band. That was their thing, and honestly I don't really care for the sound of their old music. Thing is though, they switched over to a satanic theme and I can't be sure that they didn't switch it up because of money. Satan is huge in Metal, not so much general paganism.
I dunno, maybe I'm off there too. Regardless, they talk a good game, so I hope you dig the song. The title is Latin for "Pray For Us Lucifer", cause everything is more evil if you say it in Latin.
Band: Dark Funeral

Album: Where Shadows Forever Reign (2016)
Genre: Black Metal
Well first off, can we appreciate how solid the intro to this song is? It's a really good combination of a rather classic sounding Black Metal riff, while simultaneously being rather modern. It's why I chose this song honestly, to show that these guys (though massive lineup changes) have kept a very nice fresh and traditional sound.
With lyrics leaning heavily on Satanism, Anti-Christianity, Death, and Armageddon, it should be easy enough to see why Dark Funeral landed this list.
Actually the original reason they hit this list is cause I confused them with Darkthrone, who I'm more aware of. My bad.
With such cheery songs as "Nail Them To The Cross" and a mountain of Latin in their album titles, one can only assume that Dark Funeral must be the Real Deal™. To be totally honest though, I'm not sure. It seems so over the top I feel like I can't be sure where they actually stand. They're plenty dark for sure though, and really that's what counts. The message of their music is far from positive, and while I'm a person who loves dark art, it's not like I can't admit that these dudes are a little... Off.

I dunno, ya feel me? Dark stuff. Love the visuals in the video though, those are straight fantastic.
I dig it, I'll probably listen to these guys a little bit after this if we're being honest.
Band: Bathory
Song: Hades
Album: Bathory (1984)
Genre: Black Metal
It's really a travesty that, with how this is mostly a Black Metal highlight event, that I haven't touched some of the founders of Black Metal, Bathory.
I'm honestly not as versed in the history of Bathory as I really wish I was, cause they were immensely influential in a style of music that I've recently been getting into a little bit.
As you'll hear in the song (if you choose to listen), these guys had a level of aggression that really wasn't nearly as common in the 80s as it is now. In fact, with some basic research the main acts that were doing stuff before Bathory were Motörhead, Venom, Black Sabbath, and some others. Also if memory serves, Bathory credits Motörhead with some heavy inspiration in their early sound formation. Venom did this as well, so if you're a fan of that vein of Black Metal you need to do yourself a favor and actually check out Motörhead's work. At least the early stuff.
But anyway, Bathory, as one of the founders essentially of the modern Black Metal sound, they deserve a wee bit of respect.
As I'm sure you can see from the attached image, Bathory started out with a lot of heavy religious imagery at play. As time went on, they moved much more in the direction of Viking Metal, but from the get go they filled all the traditional European Metal band boxes.
I had planned on talking to some friends of mine about Bathory since they're a week bit more informed than I am on the group, but unfortunately that fell through on me. They've got a lot of interesting music stuff going on though, so at least take the time to listen to this song, eh?
Band: Carpathian Forest

So I mean, I only heard about these guys last year while I was doing that week, but that's totally ok, cause even though I don't really know about them, they still have a really... Interesting reputation.
Most of what I know about them is that they're really freaking angry. I mean, look at the album title here, that gives you a lot of what you need to know about them.
Lyrically they come across much like a really edgy angry teenager. The only real reason they rank on the Week is because they have some heavy Satan aesthetic going on. It's actually like, all they know how to sing about.
I've gotta apologize, this post got a little away from me and now I'm out of time to write more. Tomorrow will be a cool history lesson in Black Metal though, so that'll totally make up for it.
Band: Triptykon
Song: Tree Of Suffocating Souls
Album: Melana Chasmata
Genre: Gothic Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal
Released almost exactly 3 years ago, Melana Chasmata made some waves in the Metal community. While I think his name is a little funny, frontman Tom G. Warrior really has a talent for throwing some really dark music together.
Honestly I had a really hard time picking today's song. There was the absolutely stunningly beautiful video for Shatter, but I had posted it before. Then there was Boleskine House which is eerily wonderful, especially when you get the female vocals harmonizing.
I decided to hit this song though, because it had a music video and Boleskine didn't.
Please enjoy this wonderfully dark song, is just nice music.
Side note, you know H R Giger, the mind behind the design of the alien in Alien? He designed some of Tom G Warrior guitars and all of Triptykon's album covers. Obviously he's dead now so I'm not sure who they'll go to for the next album's art, but we'll see if they can live up to the art of the rather deranged Giger's work.
Many rides to work have been spent hyping myself up for the day and destroying my neck muscles listening to this 10 minute long wall of sound and pure musical destruction.
"Luna" off of Deafheaven's latest record "New Bermuda" opens with the gnarliest riff and a sudden barrage of snare drum abuse. It's almost unrelenting at times, but knows when to take a chill pill at the right time. By chill pill I of course mean the band's signature "shoe-gaze" interludes that progress into the most optimistic guitar chords and thunderous percussion.
This band receives numerous awards and recognition for their near flawless records including 2013's "Sunbather" and they definitely deserve the attention of many heavy metal listeners.
Being able to witness their fine-tuned live set while supporting Carcass was an enormous pleasure as well as deafening...(haha).

I know you may be wondering how on earth we could step up from the literal bloodbath that was Gorgoroth. Well the simple fact is that these guys are serious about what the preach. And Watain douses people in blood too.
Gaahl of Gorgoroth for example isn't actually a full blown satanist, he just talks a big game; in his philosophy he is his own god and devil.
Watain formed initially because they were sick of people diluting the message of hate they felt Black Metal represented. At the same time they hold a great deal of distaste to the National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) movement calling them a joke that is "unable to comprehend the perversion and insanity of Black Metal" by limiting themselves to Nazi philosophy.
To make this point clear to you, lemme tell you what the singer of the group believes. Erik Dannielsson is under the firm belief that all the members of the band need to have the same belief system, that belief being Satanism. Now there's a lot of different types of Satanism though, and most of them don't even believe in the Devil as a being, he's more of an ideology. (see LaVeyan Satanism 1 and 2) But Watain want's to make sure you don't get the wrong impression of them. They are Devil Worshipers following the path of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order who are basically the group that you think of when you think of Satanists. This is the group that actually kills goats and sometimes people. Mostly it's just a cult, but just because a bad thing is small doesn't mean it's not still terrible.
But hey, getting a glimpse at nasty things is what Halloween is about, right? Also that blood I mentioned earlier? It's apparently a little difficult to pin down where they obtain it. Rumor has it that they come by it by less than legal means (read: killing animals to harvest it), but it's not exactly provable.
The worst part is that I honestly really love how this song sounds, it's a really well written piece musically. If only they didn't sing about murdering... Everybody. No, really, the lyric says Cain! Cain! By thy blade let all god's men be slain! Charming.
Just in case I have any family or my boss from church reading this post I wanna clarify, I don't listen to these guys. As good as they sound I have a fundamental opposition to their message, so don't worry, haha.
Band: Gorgoroth
Genre: Black Metal
Language: Strong
So as we get closer and closer to Halloween I figure we can ramp up significantly more than the last few days.
Here is Gorgoroth.
Named after the mythology created by J.R.R. Tolkien, Gorgoroth is one of the hardest hitting Black Metal acts out there. As far as this week goes they are one of the more "evil" bands we're gonna come across since they actually do terrible things on a regular basis. Sure Varg of Burzum is a nasty racist piece of trash, but his hatred has managed to get him silenced some places and has banned him from freaking France. Gorgoroth still tours all over the place with some of the most messed up stage shows I've seen.
This song is off of the last album released with vocalist Gaahl, who, if you follow the show, recently helped with the soundtrack for Vikings. I don't watch it, I just happened to hear about it since it was news in the Metal community.
Music video wise these guys are a little intense. I'll link it here, but due to the excessive content in the video I'm gonna let you check it out yourself if you feel like it. It contains footage from a show that almost got them banned from Poland though. Blood, actual sheep heads on spears, and 6 crucifictions to be exact.
Let's continue to move toward the big wigs in the Metal community with Varg Vikernes, sole member of Burzum.
One of the things people don't always catch about Black Metal musicians is that they aren't all into Satan. A portion of them, Varg included, are strictly in it in an Anti Christian way from a Nordic perspective. He doesn't believe in the devil so worshiping Satan isn't really his deal.
I'm gonna be honest, Varg is a guy I can't quite wrap my mind around. I want to dislike hime because he has some rather intense opinions, but I can't fault the fact that he states his opinions in a rather compelling way. Don't believe me that a racist Neo-Nazi could be convincing? Check out his YouTube channel, he's very active, funny, and informative as to his opinions.
Don't get me wrong, I do not support his theology, I'm just letting you check him out.
The fact that he's managed to get past the point in his life that he brutally stabbed his bandmate to death is kinda nice; it's also nice that he's not burned down any more churches recently. He is also banned from entering France due to the hate speech against literally anybody who isn't European, fun fact.
Is he Evil? No, I don't think so. However you can't deny that he's a bit of a weird dude.
He does make solid music though, so I can at least enjoy that aspect of what he does.
Let's step up the game now with some of the founding fathers of Black Metal, Mayhem.
Taking cues from the band Venom these guys decided to make the most extreme music they possibly could. Congrats guys, you made Mayhem.
I'm gonna tell you a story about these guys. Not gonna tell you about how their singer shot his face off, not gonna tell you about how their bassist stabbed their guitarist 23 times, nothing like that.
I'm gonna tell you about their interactions with a Jewish Black Metal band, Salem.
Salem was doing things that Euronymous, the guitarist, really enjoyed. You know who didn't like them? Varg, antisemitic church burning aryan hero. Here's the gist of went down.
Mayhem: Hey, you guys are pretty great, too bad you're a bunch of jews.
Salem: F*ck you
Mayhem: *sends a bomb*
Here you go, a wonderfully trash song that hearkens to the early days of Black Metal.
Let's start out this week with a lightweight "evil" band, Immortal.
Realistically they actually aren't a dark outfit. Their lyrics aren't really about Satan like most Black Metal bands, these are the guys that do the whole winter theme. Sticking to a mostly weather theme these guys still manage to bring the punch expected by the genre.
They have some of the more recognizable corpse paint too. Because of how basic it is it makes it look a lot like the makeup KISS used to wear.

I wasn't originally going to kick off my nre Tuesday idea with something like this, but dude, it's post 666. I've been waiting for this post to swing around for almost two years and I almost missed it like a putz.
So I'll give a quick run down of the concept here. I'm going to post a song on Tuesdays that was the title track of an album. It stands to reason that if you've got a track that you're naming after the album (or vise versa) that it's gonna be really good. I'm going to judge that. I will give you my opinion on whether it actually measures up to the hype I've assigned it or not. It's gonna be a blast.
Ok, Behemoth.
I can't remember if I mentioned it before, but these guys were detained in Russia a few months back for being "too evil". Like, their Russian tour was canceled due to this and they were detained by the authorities.
So this is their most recent album, The Satanist. It had a lot of hype going into it because the vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter of the band, Nergal, was diagnosed with leukemia. It was really up in the air whether the band would actually continue because of this. Well he apparently got better, because they're touring again.
So let's compare this track to the rest of the album. I personally think it represents it quite well. They didn't try to make in a contemplative track that stands at odds with the rest of the album, they didn't try to make it the intro to the album, they just let it be it's own song. If you were to pick this song to try and figure out what the album sounds like, it's honestly a good bet. I can't honestly recommend listening to the band because they're a little iffy, but my personal opinion is that this song represents the album and, just as importantly, conveys the message of the album.

Here ya go, another band that sings about Satan! This isn't nearly the same as Ghost though, this is much more Metal. You may remember way back when Jeff used to post? Well he posted one of these guys songs then. If you followed me this long then that's sweet and if not, go ahead and read his post. He's an amusing fellow with decent music taste, he just doesn't like helping me or being tied down to projects he didn't decide to do.
Anyway, the song is a really fun song. Think Venom mixed with Motorhead.
On a side note, Cooking With Alcohol pt 4 happened yesterday! I learned that I don't like bourbon too much, and that I put way too much in my burger. You see, I tried to make a bourbon burger, and it didn't go too well. Far too much bourbon. Maybe I'll get it right next time, eh?
On February 23 of this year, Carach Angren came out with another Symphonic Black Metal masterpiece.
I wrote the song reviews as I listened to the music, so take into consideration that you are basically reading a live review up till the very end.

Genre: Symphonic Black Metal
Language: Strong
Caution: Disturbing Themes
Opening up with a small into titled "Once Upon A Time..." that slowly builds in intensity and sounds like the into to a dark telling of Little Red Riding Hood or something like that. However, that is not the direction that this music decides to take.

We then hit the second track titled "There's No Place Like Home". With the title of the album, I originally anticipated an album that followed the thought path of some of The Grimm Brother's fairy tales. I was very mistaken, considering this song is very much about domestic abuse. It's actually a really dark story the lyrics paint and it borderline makes me uncomfortable with how graphically it describes everything.
At this point it is clear that this is going to be one of the darker narratives Carach Angren has undertaken as we follow the story of a brother and sister.
The next step taken in this dark journey is "When Crows Tick On Windows". The children flee from their abusive home, only to be caught again by their father. After dragging them back home we find that the mother has killed herself rather than live with this life anymore. It has a rather haunting string piece at the end that turns into an emotion laden lament.
"Two Flies Flew Into A Black Sugar Cobweb" brings back the thought of flight from the nightmare house. The children run into the woods and get lost in the night. Fearful, they continue on till dawn when they come across a city and a small playground. Here they meet a man dressed as a clown, who seems to want to help them at first, though it is then revealed that he only wishes to drug and kidnap them.
"Dreaming Of A Nightmare In Eden" takes a mild step away from the main narrative to tell a very dark take on part of the tale of Hansel and Gretel. This is likely a dream brought on by the drugs they were given.
"Possessed By A Craft Of Witchery" opens with the children waking up in a basement. They have been kidnaped by "a deranged psychotic" who hears the voice of a witch in his head. The only way to keep the witch at bay is to kill children in a ritual manner. We close on the death of the boy in this story.
"Killed And Served By The Devil" opens at the end of the last song. The way the killer mutilates the boy is now described from the perspective of the sister, who is restrained in a cage in the same room this is taking place in. After the dismemberment has finished the girl is forced to bury her brother in the back garden. After she finishes burying the boy it is time to clean the kill room. After being told that she will serve as a slave to the killer until the witch calls for her death, it is time to eat. There is quite a thing at the end, which I will let you hear.
"The Witch Perished In Flames" opens on the girl waking in her cage again. Following the murder of her brother she contemplates suicide. However, she realizes that there is naught to be gained through her own death and she makes the commitment to be brave. Taking her chance at the next meal, she kills the man. During the scuffle a fire breaks out and she leaves while the monster burns in his home.
"Tragedy Ever After" begins with Gretel waking. She ran hard into a tree and now is unsure whether she is in the real world or not. Judging by the strange shadowy being calling to her, it would seem she is in purgatory. Seeing as it's purgatory it makes sense that the burned corpse of her brother's killer returns. Or wait, is it? As the song says while the abusive father is shown leaving the room, "The real nightmare continues in reality."
**Going for longest post yet record**
So let's talk for a second. This is a musically solid album. Everything that they do plays to the mood of the setting they are trying to describe. Swelling and falling, the entire album just works.
I will give this a solid 8/10, a definite score for Carach Angren to add to their discography.
I listened to this album all the way through on Wednesday and I'm not sure how obvious it is to you guys, but I definitely felt like I was falling into a dark mood while listening to this. Something about music that has an orchestra in it just tugs at my emotions, and if you read through the lyrics while you listen the whole experience is heightened in a way. I don't mean to sound all emo, it's just what happens.
Still though, I would call this a really good album and worth a listen. If you're not a fan of Metal, check out the first and last track since they're instrumental anyway. It's orchestral with a gritty guitar undertone, so it's obviously good.

I just found this the other day via Carach Angren's Facebook page and it made me laugh enough that I thought I'd show you guys. Hope you enjoy it, cause it's only like 1 minute long.
Portal. Such an interesting group really. I will start by letting you see the singer.

Any band that hires a clock headed man to lead a band of executioners is ok in my book, that's for sure.
So Portal is a band that is really heavy on endless riffs in a lot of songs. The lead guitarist, going by the interesting name of "Horror Illogium" has said in the past that Portal's intent is "To capture a cinematic horror scope." Basically, this guys further prove the point that anything from Australia is both badass and terrifying. I mean, can you show me a borderline grind band that plays in suits? I don't think so. (Fleshgod Apocalypse doesn't count because they're Symphonic Death)
Here's a bonus, it's a live video. The main difference is that in the studio mix it starts a lot more like a dark ambient song. The more I listen to it, the more I think I need to obtain a physical copy of an album.
I don't think Glumurphonel is a real word, but that just fits what my brother said before, "Any band that has to make up words to sound scarier is probably a little evil."
Also that's a totally legit quote for anybody who was wondering.
Now I'm gonna throw this out there. This is a horrible song. This is dark, vulgar, and the video has satanic imagery and mild nudity. Ok then, here goes. You have been warned.
Behemoth is the band. They are considered to be the most evil band out there right now by a good many people, and for good reason.
Forming in 1991, their themes ranged mostly on paganism, though in recent years they have turned toward satanic content (as that is what's "in" right now).
They were also one of the first (or the first) band(s) to be banned from Russia.
The lead singer and guitarist Nergal did almost die of leukemia in 2010, but did manage to make a full recovery though his doctors told him he was beyond healing. A bone marrow transplant and many other such procedures later, Nergal went home in January of 2011, and by summer was up and going again.
One actually funny thing about the bad is that their corpse paint is just toothpaste. That is all that the base of it is. There is some black around the edges as well, but seriously, who is ingenious enough to use toothpaste? It's literally everywhere too, so it's not like their gonna run out.
As much as it pains me to admit it, I really like the sound these guys have. They have good solid musical talent and a really good sound. Still, It's just a little too much for me to take a lot of the time.
On a side note, Nuclear Blast records has some of the best bands I've heard in a while.
So there is actually quite a story behind this. Mayhem was meant to be the most extreme band that ever existed when it was originally formed, which is quite a bold statement to make really.
The lineup on this album has quite a list of people. With Hellhammer on Drums, Euronymous on Guitar, Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh) on bass, and Attila Csihar as vocalist, the band recorded what is considered by many to be one of the best black metal albums ever.
Funny thing though, the band has quite an issue with death in it's early years with their longest lasting vocalist (at the time) named Dead killing himself before the recording of this album, and Varg stabbing Euronymous to death after the recording.
Though Euronymous' family requested that the bass tracks be re-recorded on the album, Hellhammer thought it would be appropriate to keep the killer and the victim together forever. Though originally telling the family that it was changed, he kept it on and only revealed it at a later date.
With the exception of one other band, these guys are probably the most "evil" band I can think of. Not due to the killing or anything, but the content. The albums name literally translates as "Lord Satan's Secret Rites" as a prime example.
Having listened to it, this is actually one of my favorite metal albums I've heard in a while. Remember though, don't worship the devil kids.
I'll be honest though, I've got no clue about who this band is. They're a Black Metal act that were formed in the US, so that's a little bit of a fun thing. I would say it's cool that they managed to take off, but seeing as a misfiling of some work by Bach is overriding any of their song's plays they are clearly the most underground band I'm going to share this month.
