Nothing's more fun that some really grooving music, which is something that Periphery is more than a little good at.  Since about 2005 these guys have been rocking the Djent community with their chugging grooves.

I'm partially regretting picking these guys since I honestly don't know too much about them, but what I do know is that they're good, so we're gonna go with that today.

A to Z 2K17: M is for Meshuggah

Band:  Meshuggah

Album:  The Violent Sleep Of Reason
Genre:  Djent, Progressive Metal

If you watched the film Wolf Of Wall Street, you might have seen 'ol Leo DiCaprio make a face similar to the singer of Meshuggah.  The singer being the dude in the middle.  Because of that there were a couple people who took one of the scenes of the movie and dubbed Meshuggah over it.  Twas funny.

For those of you more interested in facts about the band, here ya go then.

Meshuggah doesn't really do melody, they are a band that focuses on complex rhythm.  There's a lot to be said for that though, as they consistently manage to crush their way through everything with their insanely heavy sound.  They kinda do this thing where the drummer mostly plays in 4/4 time the rest of the band will play in a different time signature that floats around the drummer's beat.  It's a really cool musical element that not a lot of people try for and even less do well.

Honestly it's down even to the vocals.  The band has said that the vocals only exist as another rhythmic element, which is why they've sounded very much the same over the course of all of their albums.

Rob Scallon - Gas Mask Catalogue

Artist:  Rob Scallon
Genre:  Metal, Djent

Well if it isn't the internet's favorite guitarist, Rob Scallon.

Rob has been making music for the last 10 years on YouTube, but most people only became aware of him in the last 3 or 4 because of his banjo covers of popular Metal bands.

I feel like his originals don't really get the respect that they deserve though, so whenever I post him I really try to include them as much as possible.

Let's talk about his 9 string guitar real quick.  It's basically a one of a kind prototype that he received due to his partnership with Schecter, a popular guitar brand for Metal musicians.  The big thing that he does with the guitar is he doesn't abuse the lowest string.  It's such a hugely different range between the lowest and the highest strings that if you're doing what Rob does here with playing across the whole thing it turns a little muddy.  All in all it's a really solid song to listen to though, so have fun listening to it and supporting an independent artist.

Emmure - Protoman

I don't know the games honestly, I just know I'm zonked out right now and need to sleep.  Apologies.

Also sorry about doing poorly with the whole Title Track Tuesday idea, I honestly meant to do more than this with it.  Maybe some other time.

Meshuggah - Born In Dissonance

Yo, Meshuggah released a new track today and I'm ffreaking pumped.  I don't really follow them as much as I'd like, but you've gotta hear this song.  It's straight up amazing.

It follows all the crazy time signature chugging everybody loves Meshuggah for, so get into it a have fun.

Emmure - Solar Flare Homicide

Band:  Emmure
Genre:  Djent
Language:  Strong

I can't remember if I mentioned this when I posted Atilla a while back, but these guys were in an offensive band shirt contest with them.  It was kinda stupid, and I've had the "pleasure" of seeing both bands contributions in person at this point.

This is a fun song though.  It mostly stays within the general joke that Emmure have made themselves to be with the "Oh, they only play 01110011011010000110100101110100, there's no feeling to that kind of music" thing, but that doesn't mean the music isn't still fun.  The lead in to each chorus just revs up perfectly to drag you into whatever is going on here.

I like it, maybe you will to.

Periphery - Zero

Band:  Periphery
Genre:  Progressive Metal, Djent

This album is a pretty cool concept.  Each track was written by a different member of the band, thus lending each track a rather different sound than the others.

This track was written by one of the guitarists, so as you'd expect there's a slightly larger amount of guitar compared to other songs.  It's actually straight up instrumental.

Meshuggah - Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion

Genre:  Djent, Progressive Metal

Other than having an absurdly long title this song is also really heavy.  Meshuggah is a bit of a front runner in really low tunings, way back in the day they got the some of the earlier 7 string guitars.

In their quest to tune lower they also have managed to gain a place in almost everybody's heaviest band lists.  I tried to avoid doing that with my choices and more going with personal opinion, but there's some people I can't ignore.  Almost everybody has Sunn O))) on their list, but I honestly thing that their heaviness aspect come's more from their shows that are loud enough to demolish buildings more than the actual music.  It's a little too stripped down to make my list for me.

Meshuggah on the other hand has earned their spot, and they shall have it.

Periphery - Feed The Ground

Band:  Periphery
Genre:  Djent, Progressive Metal
Language:  Strong

I feel like I usually have a lot of issues going from one musically extreme to another.  Like, I try to cut out some of the Rap and I switch to solid Death Metal for a week, or something like that.  I also always promise to try not to switch extremes.  Well you know what?  I'm actually gonna do that this time.  We're gonna have a good few days of "normal" music.

I'm on a kick of music that I just said I wouldn't post for a little bit though, but we are gonna actually have variety, I promise, haha.

One thing that Periphery is known for is having a singer that sounds like Katy Perry when he hit's his high notes.  He's better than her though cause his lows are stronger and he can scream.  Honestly he's a really freaking talented vocalist.

Outside of that the band is a really nice sounding group.  For a Prog group they don't really hit you over the head with it.  Some bands go hard with the weird time signatures and such, but these guys manage to keep it chill.  Still complex stuff, but a lot more accessible than say, Between The Buried And Me.

Listen to this with good headphones though, or a good system with nice bass response.  You'll enjoy it a lot more if you can hear all the hits.

Meshuggah - Bleed

You know what I love most about Meshuggah?  The singer's face.  Look at that face.  He makes it everywhere, at every show, and it's become a joke in the metal community.  A good joke though, not a bad joke.

When Wolf Of Wall Street came out there's a scene in the middle where Leo DiCaprio's character makes the face.  There's a video that somebody made that puts the scene with the face backed by some Meshuggah song.

Jared Dines - But Does It Djent?

Artist:  Jared Dines
Genre:  Djent, Deathcore
Language:  Some, Strong

Jared Dines is a guy from YouTube who sometimes makes Deathcore and Djent songs, but mostly just makes videos about the different types of musicians.  This guy is really talented, he can play drums, bass, guitar, and can scream.  I'd advise checking out his channel, just cause it's pretty funny.

This song is about people putting too much store in whether a guitar can "djent" or not.  It's a joke you're more likely to get if that's the kind of music you're into, but it's still amusing.  Read the lyrics as they pop up, it might help?

"play nothing but Os" refers to playing the lowest 2 or 3 strings in a tuning that makes them a chord.  There are bands that play entire songs that are made of one chord played in various beats.

Let's Talk - 7/1/15

Well I kinda blew my biggest new thing with the tattoo post on Tattoo, but there's one thing that's happened to me recently.  Seriously, I'm starting to realize that month to month I really don't do too many things worth mentioning.

I did "Cooking With Alcohol Part 3" recently.

Part 1 was when I made a Rum Ham and I set a small pot of rum on fire.  I did manage to blow that out though.

Part 2 was Rum Ham 2.0, and no fires were set.

Part 3 was cooking with loads of wine.  Like, half a bottle of wine.  I chopped an onion and browned it, then I started cooking it with wine.  While I reduced the wine I made some rice to pour it all on to.  Once I had reduced the wine enough I put more in along with sliced mushrooms.  All of this steamed together for 5 minutes or so till I poured it on top of the rice.  It was actually really nice.

I attended my first leadership meeting yesterday as well, and I even got to vote for the next employee of the month.  I feel quite accomplished on that front.

As for the second job I mentioned last month, I do not have it yet.  Not sure when it'll happen, but it's there.

We're gonna mention my band again this month.  We did a cover of the Beastie Boys song Sabotage, but in a Djent inspired style.

I'm really happy with it, especially with the air raid siren.  For whatever reason I'm just really happy with it.

Something to note is that on the last verse I have a couple parts that are doubled, but there is one part that I just get super sloppy sounding in the right way at 3:11.  When I say the word "switch" I don't actually have it doubled, but it sounds like it.
