My brother and dad are great lovers of Prog music, something I never quite picked up. A nice calming song however is necessary from time to time to help make life better, amirite?
Also, this is a playthrough, so you get to watch Plini play that guitar and just straight up make you feel bad about your musical abilities. At least, that's a lot of what I ended up doing after watching this.
I unfortunately have only managed to listen to this album by Periphery. They're an amazing band, but for some reason I can't manage to find the time, they're a little too smart for me.
Not like lyrically though, they're just rather involved musically. Their use of time signatures and tempos are rather intimidating to listen to when all you want is some simple music to pass time with. I tend to not want that in my leisure time, but once I find the songs I like they are added to the list of familiar enough to enjoy.
I feel like this is a very disjointed post and for that I apologize, it's been an off day at the point of writing this.
So on one hand these guys are classed as Nu-Metal, but I'm not sure that's where they belong. A lot of people place them there simple because that's the era in which they originated, but they are far closer to Prog. According to Wiki they are Avant-Garde Metal, and that seems to fit a lot more to me.
They've got this fantastic thing they do were they seem to switch up styles in the middle of a verse. This isn't really what I'm trying to say, but I'm not really sure how to explain what I mean. Their song Chop Suey probably explains it the best, but there are moments like what I mean in this song as well.
One warning though is that this is a very opinion charged band. Politics are a primary theme due to the singer Serj Tankian Armenian ancestry. One neat note though is that Serj "was awarded the Armenian Prime Minister's Medal for his contributions to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the advancement of music." in 2011 according to Wikipedia.
I'm beginning to think I need some sort of early warning system for people to know whether they need headphones or whatever when they listen to this stuff. Maybe a language warning? Lemme know what you think, cause I'd hate to think I'm blindsiding some of you who are unfamiliar with some of the stuff I post.
Primus Sucks. I saw this picture once, it went like this. "Non Primus fans: 'Primus Sucks.' Fake Primus fans: 'Primus rocks!' Real Primus fans: 'Primus sucks!'"
I don't get where this came from other than their weird sound, but they do tend to grow on you a little bit.
This album though, this is weird.
I'll touch on it more later, but I wat you to listen to this song knowing that they remade the entire soundtrack from the 1971 Willy Wonka movie.
Frank Zappa is a weird guy. Like really, he's messed up.
He made a style of music that nobody else has quite managed to duplicate. He also managed to have some of the most vulgar lyrics of the era.
A little know fact here, the song "Smoke On The Water" is about a fire that burned up all of Zappa and The Mothers' (his band) equipment.
I'm thinking here, and I can't think I anything that I can tell you about this man. His autobiography is truly a thing to read. A very different insight into life than most people will give you.
Some of the best things about this music I'd say would be the fact that it changes up so much. If you look up live versions of his music, it's always different than the album version.
Umphrey's McGee is the essence of a jam-y prog band. They have a lot of really cool songs but this one happens to be one that has stood out to me over the years.
What I mean by standing out though, is more that this was the song I heard my brother play the most when he was in his Umphrey's kick.
From the mellow piano start to the high power ending, this song travels all over the music spectrum.
