For my brother, a goal and dream of his came true last week.
For the last 10 years, he's been a huge fan of Project 86. The issue is though, that P86 don't tour too often anymore, and when they do they don't tend to hit near northwest Pennsylvania.
Now his band has played at Creation Festival for the last couple years now, and he's had a good time in their off time there seeing a pile of bands. Well this year, Project 86 was a headliner. He told me about the show, and I'll be honest, I wish I had been there cause it sounded really cool.
In the absence of that though, here's one of my favorite songs that the band has put out. The whole album was bomb, but I especially love this one.

Staple is a band I don't really have a lot of info on. Like many bands I got from Matt, they are a Christian hardcore act. Unlike a lot of stuff he gave me though, I don't think I ever got much into their music. Ironically though, these guys are what prompted the heavy throwback theme we have going on here.
See, I somehow rediscovered these guys, and from there decided to build a theme up. So yeah, this band I hardly remember is the reason for this, you're welcome.

Now I want to clarify, not all the songs I'm gonna share in the next bit are going to strictly be from the iPod dump I got from my guy Matt. I've already posted some of them, and a couple artists only had single songs. So to fix that I'm gonna post songs that at least happened quickly after, or were directly influenced by that first jump into the pool of Metal music.
Ya boy was just sitting around, minding his own business, when my friend Matt discovered I had an iPod. He was super excited about that, and immediately offered to give me a bunch of Christian music, since I was a little light on that at the time.
He brings his laptop to the archery club we were both a part of and proceeded to set me up with a load of music. As we were going through his entire library and picking out what he thought I'd enjoy he would from time to time say "I don't know, this might be more heavy than you like." Well I'm not one to back down from a challenge (even if there isn't one), so I told him to let me have it anyway, and that I'd just get rid of it if I didn't like it.
One of the bands that caught me right away was Project 86. They had a song called The Spy Hunter, which combined with the band name, just kinda was attractive to me. That song remains one of my favorites honestly, to the level that my brother and I actually covered the song about 3.5 years ago with our band.
My brother was a gigantic fan of the band, so he quickly bought basically all their albums. This was the first one though, and we hoped it'd have The Spy Hunter on it since the line Truthless Heroes is in the song.
This album is incredibly solid though. It mat not have had the song we were hoping for, but it's so good that doesn't matter. Out of this album filled with fantastic tunes, Your Heroes Are Dead was a favorite of mine since it was hard enough to make my fledgling Metal obsession happy while also fitting into the playlist I had made for work.

Sometimes bands aren't ignored because they are too "edgy" for the Christian community, sometimes it's because they're not obvious enough. Project 86 are like, the king of metaphors and such.
I was gonna continue the whole issues I have with the Christian community hating on Metal music, but I'm don't have any more annoyance about it. Though I still have issues with how angry some people I know get about Christian bands touring in "non-christian" settings. Like when Flyleaf was playing in Vegas for a little bit. Look into that, Lacey had a great quote on it. Instead of my agenda though I'm just gonna go back to pointing you toward songs I like a lot and some trivia.
Project 86 was touring with Linkin Park back when they were both smaller. Linkin Park however managed to land getting the main song in the Transformers movie and it helped boost them to the superstar status that they're at now. Unfortunately as many of you know, Chester Bennington died on the 20th, it's something that hit a lot of people really hard. I feel bad because I never really listened to Linkin Park so I don't really relate to the whole situation in the same way a lot of my friends do, but I can't deny that the dude had a fantastic voice and that the scene is going to hurt without him
So yeah, here's a song about struggling with your own head, which I had picked before Chester died. I feel like it's oddly appropriate though.
Band: I Prevail

Language: Strong
Of the many musical weaknesses I have, decent Metalcore and Hardcore are definitely up there. I never actually look for it, but then I either find it by accident or somebody as me listen to it.
We have this one delivery guy who none of us are sure how to feel about. He's nice enough, but he's like, always too talkative. We mostly want him to just bring our produce and get out, but he does like to talk a lot. The other day he came in and totally ignored me talking for a moment and when he took out his earbud and acknowledged I was talking he told me about this band.
You know what though? It wasn't like it was too bad, I was introduced to a decent band and got to get distracted from work for a few minutes. Good times.
As a happy Christmas Eve I've decided to give you a fun newish take on The Grinch's song. The singer for P86, Andrew Schwab, wanted to recapture the horror he felt about The Grinch back when he was a kid, but he found that the original song just didn't cut it anymore. The band rewrote the music and The Schwab fixed up the lyrics to give ol' Grinchy a touch up in the creep department.
The song's rather fantastic and a great into to your adventures into A Very P86 Christmas, which is an interesting take on a couple Christmas songs plus some originals as well. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!
Who doesn't love a good food fight? Apparently P86 is a rather large fan of them because this whole music video is one of the more intense food fights you're gonna see, ya feel?
Now I gotta be clear here, I love this album. This was a really good album that P86 put out; this was hands down their "weird" album though. (by the way, see that mutha'? I used a semicolon. Probably wrong, but at least I'm breaking my unending string of commas, be happy for me.) A lot of bands seem to have that one "weird" album that doesn't really fit the sound they'd established for themselves in albums past. For Slipknot it was Vol. 3, for Stone Sour it was Audio Secrecy, for Metallica it was Saint Anger, and so on and so forth. You can generally find an album like this that quite often marks a change in the band's sound. The ones I mentioned were more of a stand alone change and not a total stylistic change, but there are dozens of bands I'm sure that come to mind for you that had "That one album" that changed their sound either for better or worse.
The cool thing about this album is this is mostly the direction that a lot of P86's later albums took. Not quite as extreme as this album shows, but still more than the old RATM style music they had on the first couple albums. Took a few albums for it to take though, but I still think you could hold this album up as an example of major change with the group.
My brother turned me on to P86 several years ago after we heard their song The Spy Hunter in a compilation album for some record label. He continued to look into these guys while I continued to look into Demon Hunter, but it's all good cause we met back up later to exchange CDs after we were both obsessed.
While I'm writing this I made the mistake of listening a bunch of their other material again and I actually found a bunch of songs that I like more than this one but since they've got crazy solid bass work, but I made my choice already. No biggie, this song has always been in my top 5 P86 songs anyway, the others just have more fun bass stuff going on.
I hope you enjoy these guys, they've got a rather unique song to them.
I heard this song on a compilation album called "This Is Solid State" that was harking the entry to Solid State records step into the spotlight.
I really loved the weird sound going down here. There's some intense high screaming, the really weird vocal effects as they enter what I assume is the chorus. Awe yeah man, all good.
I haven't really heard any of the rest of their stuff though cause back when I first started listening to them I didn't have anything convenient like Spotify, just the good old YouTube. I mean, that's a great way to find all the music videos and similar music, but not always as good if you don't know what you're looking for, ya dig?

This is a very powerful sounding song. The intro riff just starts out in a very raw way, then it picks up with a little more stuff starting to enter into the scene, then straight up punches you in the face with the vocal intro.
One thing that I love about music is when it manages to get some dynamics working. This song is a little flat dynamically, but what it lacks for in rise and fall in makes up for in power. Sometimes you don't need the dynamics that I love, sometimes you just need hit in the face with music. This song hits me in the face.
Project 86 is a Post Hardcore band from Orange County California. They've been around since 1996 and have evolved greatly in their sound over that time. They started sounding an awful lot like Rage Against The Machine and have settled into many different sounds over the years.
The Spy Hunter is one of my personal favorite tracks of theirs for a couple reasons. The main one being that I've covered it before and it's a really really fun song to play. Another reason is that it's a great pump up song. Once it starts it just keeps grinding away till the end and I really like that about a song.
