Come on now, who doesn't like Nine Inch Nails first album?  The whole thing is just a straight up work of art.  I mean, at least appreciate an album that helped define a era of weird agery music, yeah?

I come back to stuff like this from time to time because it's just something that speaks to me.  Kinda like the weird art styles I'm attracted to, Nine Inch Nails just has something about them that screams "Hey, I'm really good, love me" in a way I don't know how to tell people.

You very much feel Reznor's raw emotion through so much of his music, it's intense.  There's actually a version of this song played on piano that I'd advise you check out.  It's a very different way to interpret the song that brings light to how uneasy the whole thing feels.  I like it.

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt

I suppose basically everybody has heard this song covered by Johnny Cash.  It's the classic case of a cover that surpassed the original in it's popularity that used to happen to people like Bob Dylan a lot.

I know basically everybody ever seems to say that the cover is better, but let's pull back into the base of the atrociously named "sad week" and talk about this one, especially in the context of the album.

Starting with the album which was titled The Downward Spiral;  Clearly it's an album written by somebody who was really unhappy at the time.  It's pretty well documented that Reznor had pretty severe drug and alcohol problems during the writing and recording of his darker albums and this is no exception.  Wanting an album that oozed pain and feeling he actively avoided seeking help for his problems.  It was also recorded in the house where Charles Manson had murdered Sharon Tate, so not exactly a studio filled with positive energy.

Now the song.  It isn't as polished as the Johnny Cash version is.  It's not a pretty or well balanced, it's more of a cry of depression that also isn't seeking help.  A sad voice that isn't sure what it wants and is lamenting that all it will do is hurt and disappoint you.

The messy sound of it is something that I think really lends to the sadness of the piece.  You can argue that the emotion Mr Cash poured into it made the song stronger emotionally, but since this is the source piece you have to think of it differently.  It's the song that inspired a broken country musician to cover it because he identified with the pain and sadness conveyed within.

All in all I'm incredibly happy with this song's contributing to the week, it's really solid.

Here's a song from one of my favorite Nine Inch Nails albums.  I really love the variations that Reznor has made in his music over his career and this album wasn't any different.

One of the cool things about this song particularly is that it had a lot of electronic stuff going on.  Obviously he's always one stuff like this, but this one has an outro that's pure OG Dubstep.  Maybe it's not exactly like the current era of Dubstep but it's still rather cool.

Nine Inch Nails - March Of The Pigs

On a bit of an Industrial kick this week so far this week, so here's some Nine Inch Nails to liven up the party.

This song has some really funky beats going on in the beginning were it changes from like, 7/8 to 8/8 and back again just because it makes it sound a little weird and fun.  Then there's the cool piano breakdown that happens.  That's also a fun deviation from the sound of the main song.  All in all this song is really well put together and you might like it, so check it out, eh?

I decided to put this system to good use today with the Nine inch Nails song Closer.  This is a very messed up song.  I'm hoping you guys aren't getting tired of the occasional repeat artists, it gets hard to come up with a new artist everyday, so some of my favorites will make a few appearances.  What can I say, I'm a daily blog.

On that note, I'm hoping you are all enjoying this as much as I am.  This whole blogging thing has been quite an experience so far and I can't wait to branch out overtime.

A to Z Challenge: Y is for Year Zero

I really like this Nine Inch Nails album, though that''s mostly because it's the only one that I've listen through the whole way.  I like a lot of Reznor's material, but as this is what I have listened to the most I suppose you'll all have to live with that.  Also it's a great album that starts with Y.

It's a bit on an end times concept album, so there's a lot of various world ending scenarios at play here.  You have a Fallout Esq police state, an alien invasion, an act of God, and even a Dystopian future.

This is his (?) most recent addition to the "Mashup Manifesto"s, though it's not actually part of one yet.  I'm hoping it's on Manifesto 4.

Nine Inch Nails - God Given

Remember Nine In Nails?  Cool, just basically copy and paste that with a new amusing anecdote tacked on to it.

Eh, I may as well say some stuff.

Trent Reznor is one of my favorite male vocalists I think.  At the very least he's in my top 10.

This song is a song that gets me pumped for really no good reason.  It just really feels good, ya know?

Nine Inch Nails - The Only Time

Trent Reznor is one of those guys that lives on in parental infamy with the likes of Marilyn Manson, Ozzy, and Alice Cooper for an awful lot of his material.  *see Closer*  Still though, you can't deny that in his angry years he made some pretty good music.

Basically refining and popularizing the genre of Industrial Rock, Nine Inch Nails has been around since 1988 spreading angst, anger, and such things.  Performing essentially all the instruments in the studio, Reznor is the only true member of NIN.  He cycles through touring musicians for live shows though, and they help to change how each song sounds just a little bit in ways that make each live show special.

This song is my favorite off of the album Pretty Hate Machine quite probably because the bass is so freaking catchy.  Interestingly enough, you can only find about 3 covers of this song on Youtube, and none of them with the bass, which I find surprising.
