I'm in a bit of a winter slump right now, so I figured I'd let loose with a downer of a track from Korn.
Korn is great for a couple things. Chugging their way through everything, and contributing to thousands of angry emo playlists. That's not a bad thing though, some of the best songs are on angry emo playlists.
Honestly I really live Korn's music. It's angry, grinding, filled with angst, and just has an attitude of its own. Seeing them live was hands down a huge highlight of my concert experiences due to the massive energy they brought to the crowd. They played most of my favorite songs, but there's still some fun tracks that get ignored by the main community, so here's one of them. It's a good time, I hope you like it.

When Korn finally hit the stage the rest of the show I was actually kinda nervous. I didn't know if their show would hold up to the rest of the show so far. I mean, in hindsight that was a really dumb thing to worry about, but any time I'm at a concert that goes late I generally feel like I enjoy the second to last act. Too much of a good thing and all that.
Luckily, nothing about Korn's show was disappointing.
They opened up with Rotting In Vain, and since that's the main single from the new album that makes sense. I was really pumped about the second song though, which was Falling Away From Me. This has been one of my favorite Korn songs for a while, so when they did that as the second song I was rather pumped about it.
If you're a fan of Korn I'd heavily advise seeing them live, their show is actually really solid. Jonathan Davis even played the bagpipe intro to Shoots and Ladders live, so that was dope. Lights were pretty great, and the video screens they had were really good.

Yo yo yo, album review!
So Korn dropped their new album on October 21st. I was stupid busy at the time and was teasing the idea of Nu-Vember so I thought I'd wait till now. Well here we go, Album time.
Let's kick it in the style of the 2015 A to Z Challenge and pick strengths and weaknesses.
Strong songs? Yo, we can't ignore Rotting In Vain if we're talking strong. It was the first single they released and it was basically everything that Korn fans wanted to see. There was a mountain of the old sound to it and then right as you didn't think it could get any better you get slapped in the face with the crazed beatboxing segment a la Twist but like, way better. None of my friends knew what to do when this song hit, it was the old school Korn sound with modern mixing making it sound good.
I feel like there's only one song on the album that I just don't care for as much is the song with Corey Taylor of Slipknot. It's not bad, but I feel like it was hands down the weakest single that was released and just didn't life up to what I had assumed Corey would deliver on. It wasn't a bad song, I just thought it could be better.
Some other songs to make a point to check out though would be The Hating (very classic Issues vibe to it almost), Next In Line (got some good old DJ noises here), When You're Not There (just generally solid), and Black Is The Soul. All of these are probably my favorites on the album, but it's all crazy solid.
The best thing? They delivered on their promise, no Dubstep sounds. I loved The Path Of Totality, but it wasn't as good a Korn album as it was a remix album for songs didn't have original versions if that makes sense.
This album is exactly what Korn needed to get back up there. Paradigm Shift was good, but it had a lot of flops on it like Hater, Never Never, Paranoid & Aroused, and some others. This album has their old edge while getting a modern twist to it of actually having well mixed music behind the vocals.
If we can get a resurgence of classic Nu-Metal sounds like this I will be one happy camper.
Since Rotting In Vain is my favorite track on the album I'm gonna have it be the one that get's featured as a placeholder on the playlist.
Speaking of new music, here's Korn's new single from a day or two ago. It's really good and makes me really excited for the album since the one released a bit before was also fantastic. Like, dude. This album is gonna be dope.
I can't really stress enough how excited I am for some of this year's releases, they're lining up to be a great last few months, so yeah. Hype.
This is the kind of Nu-Metal I was talking about yesterday though. The song just grinds itself on to the end in a beautifully wonderful fashion in a way that is the main reason I love Nu-Metal.
This is one of the first Korn songs I ever heard and as such it holds a special place in my heart. Well, kinda at least. It's really good with all the chugs and simple drum work. Also the video is totally dope.
Speaking of totally dope Korn released a new video yesterday or so and it's apparently really good.
What can be said about Korn anymore. They were one of "those bands" for the beginning of their career because of their sound and subject matter, they disappeared for a bit with some less popular stuff, they put out a surprisingly good Dubstep album, then they finally put out what their "new sound" was.
This song is from the new album, so let's rewind in the timeline.
So they were formed way back in 93, which actually means they are as old as a band as I am as a person. I'm unsure how to feel about that come to think of it.
They've maintained a rather consistent lineup honestly. Head left back in 2005 but has since rejoined as of 2013. David Silveria left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Ray Luzier on Drums. David though, unlike Head, has done nothing but burn bridges with the band for the last 2 years. The dude is honestly saying some rather messed up stuff that, true or not, is rather unprofessional.
But yeah, the music got a tad generic for a bit when David stopped caring. The drums were primarily all done either on a program or recorded by the singer Jonathan Davis and as such the groove of their suffered a bit.
That's not important though because Ray has been a fantastic improvement to their sound.
Then the Dubstep album. Fans hated this because it was released at the same time as all the Dubstep hate was reaching a peak. It's like, at the time it was a poor decision, but going back it's like the best thing ever. The combination of Korn's sound with the various artists that they worked with is just a terrific thing.
The newest album is a much smoother blending of the sounds though. You've still got electronic elements but there's also a more polished version of the old Korn in there. I like it and you should too.
Korn went through a bit of a rough time in 2011 when they released a Dubstep album. I won't say it's a horrible sounding album, but it really is a vastly different direction from their traditional sound. On one hand change is good, but on the other hand this was right when Dubstep was being hotly contested as whether it was "real" music or not. It still is now, but it's much more accepted.
People are still iffy about the new Korn sound (which is really different from this) but one thing that almost all Korn fans can agree on is that this album just isn't too great.
FLIP SIDE
If you're a fan of Metal and Dubstep mixed then this is something you'll like. The album is great for Dub fans that like the more vocally centered stuff with a little bit of a harsher edge.
I'm beginning to think I need some sort of early warning system for people to know whether they need headphones or whatever when they listen to this stuff. Maybe a language warning? Lemme know what you think, cause I'd hate to think I'm blindsiding some of you who are unfamiliar with some of the stuff I post.
When Head left KoЯn he formed this band. Actually I suppose I mean solo project, since it has his name on it and all. You may remember Love and Death? That is his band that he has now and this was his first act after leaving. Korn. (I'm not gonna do all that "Я" stuff anymore, it's just annying.)
KoЯn is a really good band even though they're Nu-metal. Some exceptions must be made to rules and stuff, and these guys would be one of those exceptions.
Basically they were a defining role of Nu-Metal. There's a slip point where some went in the Limp Bizkit direction and some went the KoЯn direction, and this is definitely in my opinion, the better option.
One fun little thing is that the singer, Jonathan Davis, is a huge conspiracy theorist. He think the Illuminati control everything and that Obama is using Miley Cyrus as a tool toward world domination. Kinda crazy if you ask me to be honest.
This track unfortunately is off of the "drum machine" days they had. Before they got a new drummer, David, their original, get very lazy. Most of the drums on the album were actually played by Jonathan Davis, and thus sound just a little repetitive. It fits their sound, but it shows that some of the care as gone.
This is probably my favorite song they did, so I hope you like it.
