Fats Waller - Handful of Keys

Band: Fats Waller
Song: Handful of Keys
Album: Handful Of Keys (1938)
Genre: Jazz, Swing

So I'm having a disaster of a time finding original release dates for these older songs.  Most of the recordings that are around now seem to be bootlegged live recordings of one type or other, and the official releases were mostly put out in the 80s and 90s, so you know there's no way that's legit.

Still though, I'm tying as much as I can to give reasonably accurate dates, ya feel?

Enjoy one of the greatest Jazz piano dudes to ever live.

A to Z 2K17: D is for Dizzy Gillespie

Artist:  Dizzy Gillespie
Song:  Groovin' High
Album:  Groovin' High
Genre:  Jazz

Gotta love a little Jazz from time to time.  I've never been the biggest fan of Jazz with words in it myself, I tend to like the stuff that's instrumental.  Not all of Dizzy's work is instrumental, but as far as words Jazz goes when he has them in I like that a lot as well, ya dig?

This'll just be a chill post as does befit Jazz, but I'm sure I'll have a bunch of you annoyed with whatever I post tomorrow.

Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox - Gangsta's Paradise

Band:  Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox
Genre:  Jazz

We were talking about music last night at work and since I like cover songs a lot I decided to ask what everybody's favorites were.  After a resounding round of hate toward 5FDP and every cover they've ever played on of the guys mention Scott Bradlee.

I'm sure you've probably heard of this dude once or twice, but if you haven't please grace your ears with one of the songs he's organized.

Fats Waller - Your Feet's Too Big

Fats Waller was one of the great jazz piano players, and has held a special place in my heart for many years.

With a face like that though, can you blame me?  This guys amazing.

My dad used to play this guy and a few other people all the time when I was really young, and they've all held a special place in my heart ever since.

This song in particular used to play a lot because it was stuck in the tape deck of my dad's truck for years.  This and some other artists I believe.  Not sure what it all was, but it was a really good tape.

Hope you all like it as much as I do.

Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser (Album)

EDIT:  I really feel bad, cause I accidentally released this on October 24th when I was writing it and people were trying to read it during the "Week Of Evil".  Sorry if that was you!

Ok, back to the real thing.

You know what's really nice?  Jazz.  I like jazz.  But not crappy jazz.  If there's a girl singing, then she'd better leave right away or else that band hits my list of "I don't like it".

So other than Fats Waller and Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk is one of my top jazz acts to listen to.  Despite the fact that I've only just started recently listening to them, the band quickly climbed my list of jazz favorites for one good reason.  No singing.

While I like some "singing jazz", I really feel like it distracts me from the music I'm trying to enjoy.  Either way though, instrumental; music is a really nice thing to have on in the background no matter what you're doing.

The Ink Spots: I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire

I'll be totally honest here, I had never heard this song before playing Fallout 3.  In fact, most of us probably heard it there and probably nowhere else.

One day though, I got a pile of record albums from a friend of mine and I decided to just play some of them.  This was one of the records that I put on and you can imagine my surprise when I found this song!  I had the vinyl album that was home to  Fallout 3's theme song and I was happy.

I know nothing about this band, so I hope you enjoy my personal connection to the song!
