It's been 5 years since their last release, and I didn't think they were gonna put anything else out, then I got to work tonight and my dude Nick told me about the fact that Alice In Chains has dropped some new material.

I'm loving it, because it's a really cool mix between like, Man In The Box and maybe Stone?  It's a super solid mix of old and new, and the other single that was released a couple weeks ago that I just discovered is also great.  It's gonna be a good album, I'm feeling it.

Alice In Chains - Check My Brain

I feel like a vastly underrated AiC album is the one they put out after Layne died.  Sure, it doesn't really feel the same as some of their older work, but I feel like the fact they picked up a vocalist who was able to compete with Layne at all is a miracle in itself.

I like a lot of the tracks on the album though, with the first half being especially strong.  This'll be a short post cause I'm really sick and need sleep, catch ya later.

Alice In Chains - Man In The Box

The vocal work on this song always gives me chills when it kicks in.  Layne Staley is such a fantastic vocalist, but unfortunately he fell victim to the problem that hit a lot of singers in Grunge bands.  He died of a heroin overdose.

They have some songs that kinda showcase what he was struggling with.  Songs like Sludge Factory, Hate To Feel, and Junkhead showcase a lot of what he was going through.  Just one of those things, ya know, there's always some sort of sign.  Of course, this was one of the kings of the Grunge scene, realistically he wasn't about to stop.  But hey, food for thought.

Always loved this song though.  It's really chunky in the way the drums and rhythm guitar groove together, and then when the vocals hit singing along with the lead guitar it just becomes that much better.  Check it out.

Ok, that's a little depressing.  But not as depressing as this song!

Songs about drug addiction are never a happy subject, and songs about heroin are even less so.  But hey, Layne Staley wrote about what he did, right?  While he was a fantastic vocalist, he did have his problems.

Apologies for the short post, I'm a little tired today because I delayed writing this till the night before.

Alice In Chains - Hollow

I'm still staying away from both Rap and Metal for a little bit still, I know I probably burnt you out on them for a bit, haha.

So here' the plan for the April A to Z.  I'm gonna try and dredge up as much obscure stuff as I can.  Not there's a chance you might have heard them from me before, but I occasionally post obscure stuff.  The likelihood of me revisiting stuff like that is low though, so it's all good.

As an alternate option to that I'm also going to run and artist profile.  I'll probably do a mix of the two to make things work out easiest.  I will also really try not to wimp out when I get to the hard letters like Q and X.

Alice In Chains - Them Bones

I'm really tired, so I'm gonna go with one of my favorite songs as a backup.  It's a really good song from a really good band that you should appreciate, right?

I apologize for what some of the post this week are gonna be like, I'm dead tired and have very little free time.  Tomorrow (aka today) I'll have something more like an hour or more of free time, so I'll have a better post prepped for you all.

A to Z Challenge: D is for Dirt

Alice in Chains.  I have posted them a lot and I want to make it abundantly clear that they are in my top 3 bands ever.  Period.  That being said, this album is actually quite amazing in it's own right.  Let's talk about a couple things here.

I have the greatest hits album AiC put out.  The two disc one that has a good 28 songs on it.  I would say it's safe to say that this is a really good selection of their material since it has a pile of stuff from a 4 or 5 album stretch.

Cool thing coming, aight?

10 of the 13 tracks on Dirt are on my greatest hits album.  10 out of freaking 13.  That's a lot.  I'll mark them with stars.

Out of these I only see Iron Man not making the cut as a classic since it's a mostly noise track anyway.  This album is really solid and I would strongly advise you give it a listen.

At the very least listen to tracks 1, 4, 6, and 12 since those are some of my hands down favorite tracks they've ever put out.

Alice In Chains - Stone

Old AiC is amazing.  Seriously, their stuff is fantastic and I love it a lot.  New AiC is also good.  There are a lot of people that really don't like the new singer cause Layne is a legend, but I say that it's still good stuff.

This is a song off of the new album, which I haven't listened all the way through yet.  I feel weird posting this song because of that but seriously, listen to this freaking awesome bass tone.  It's huge and fantastic and it makes me sad that I can't get it.

I also really like the riff in general.  Just throwing that out there.  Also Alice In Chains puts on an amazing live show if you ever get the chance to see them.  Jaw dropping and loud and fantastic.

Alice In Chains - Angry Chair

EDIT 3.25.18:  Changed the name back to Alice In Chains, cause labeling Allison Chains just made me angry.

I'll admit, this was what I thought Alice In Chains was called for a good 4 years.  I wasn't too familiar with their stuff at the time though, so I'd say that it's ok.  (as it turns out this is actually the name of an all girl cover band for Alice In Chain.)

AiC was a big name in the late 80s and 90s grunge scene, right up there with Nirvana and the like.

Layne Staley is one of the more unique vocalists I've ever heard, but I'm not gonna get into that right now since this is supposed to be a short read.  Suffice it to say that in my book, there are very few vocalists who compare to Layne in the realm of rock vocals.

The track I've selected is called Angry Chair.  One of the special things about this song is that it was written entirely by vocalist Layne Staley, rather than Jerry Cantrell as most of the songs were.   I don't know how perceptive you are to feelings in music, but I personally can feel a lot of anger and frustration in the song and I think it improves the song.
