I had these guys pop up while I was shuffling the main blog playlist the other night, and I just can't get past how much I love them. Like, dude, they're so freaking good. The harsh depression message in a lot of their songs is neat, because I really get what they're trying to say. Like, a lot of people talk about depression, but I feel like it usually comes across as complaining and just emo. The lyrical imagery these guys use just clicks with me, especially with their song Suicide Cargoload, which I feel I reference in every post about them.

Today I wanted to choose a slightly more low key song. Tunes that are kinda downers are something I'm probably more of a fan of than I should be, and as such Woods Of Ypres are one of my favorite bands. There's a lot of heavy subject matter in their stuff (especially my personal favorite Suicide Cargoload), and songs like this help show the variety of style they can play within.
Also it's just cool to hear anybody who screams in the band that can also sing, it helps separate the people who took the time to learn to sing properly and not kill their voice from the people who just started right out the gate screaming at people. Fun trivia fact, screaming won't kill your voice if you're careful about it, the only time it hurts you is the same time singing would hurt you just from using the wrong technique.

I decided to trot out Woods Of Ypres a little sooner than my usual 30 day limit between reposting a band because, well, I just love them so much. (Actually I guess it's exactly past 30 days, but I only realized that just now.)
Woods 5 is a heavy album. The last two songs describe (as many of them do) a depressed man, but more importantly the final track talks about a car crash. Just before the album was released, the singer died of a car crash uncannily reminiscent to the one that had been sung about. It made a lot of people wonder if he had planned it, or if it was just a terrible accident.
I don't want to post on of those songs though. I feel like every time I've posted Woods Of Ypres it's been their mellow or super depressing songs. Now while I'm straight up in love with Suicide Cargoload (best lyrical description of depression I've heard yet), they have some great songs that plod and grind a lot less.
There's honestly so much to love about this song, it's whole message is go and live your dream. Most people would say it's career suicide to quit your job and do your band full time, but these guys are reminding you not to let life pass you by without taking a chance on yourself. It's one of the reasons I love these guys. Also the huge morose attitude. That's good for me too.
There's little to no screaming here, so I hope you all can find something to appreciate in this.

I'm sure everybody has their favorite sad music, Woods Of Ypres is one of my top choices for that.
I'm leaning toward it being their smooth style that draws me in. Even the songs they scream on are incredibly plodding and powerful feeling of morose power, ya know?
The whole vibe they have going on is like that actually. Their albums are a great listen, and in general I feel like their lyrics have a lot of weight to them.

Woods Of Ypres are a band I really need to take the time to listen to more. When I posted "Mount Pleasant Cemetery" a rather long while back I remember thinking that is was something I felt I really needed to look into later, but I can't say I did. Then I was listening to some songs in Spotify's suggested section on my Metal playlist and they surfaced again for me with this song. My goodness, it's an amazing song.
And the best part is that you get this fun questionable title in the leadup week, so that's a blast.
But for real, these guys are gonna become one of my favorite bands if I'm not careful, so score there. Take a listen, you might like them too.
So I decided to pick a mountain of really sad music this week. I mostly wanted a reason to share 2 hella sad songs close together; After I asked Jeff for some song ideas though it really just took off in a major way. I only came up with the last 3 songs of this run, and as such I will be a little unfamiliar with some of them.
The first 2 and the 4th were suggested by Jeff. He's got a pretty wide pull on the Metal spectrum and I was not disappointed in this song.
Doom Metal is always a little down anyway because that's just how it is, but in this case it seems to be accented pretty heavily by the amount of clean singing. The whole song is done clean vocals and it drives home the sad feelings since you can easily understand the story they're trying to tell ya. I know the song's like, 9 minutes long, but give it a listen, it's worth it.
