I decided to fall back into the dark time of my life where Nu-Metal reigned supreme. Mostly cause I still absolutely love the genre, but also cause I was really dragging the other night and Limp Bizkit helped wake me up in a big way.
This album is honestly amazing, there's so much great stuff happening here that I can't even begin to talk about it right now. One of the things I like though is the Nine Inch Nails references in this song. Mainly the chorus, it's just a couple songs rehashed, it's a good time. Nope, not this song, my bad. The song I'm thinking of is Hot Dog.

I have no regrets saying that Limp Bizkit is one of my very favorite bands out there. Their first 4 albums are just so freaking good. There's so many things about what they do that I just love for no real reason, ya know?
Like, as musicians they're all really rather solid. Wes Borland the guitarist is straight up cutting edge in the stuff he's come up with, and for all the crap Fred Durst deserves, he's exactly what this band needs.
There were tones of bands of the era that tried to copy their sound too, so all in all I'd call Limp Bizkit the winners of the Nu-Metal era really. Korn may still be around, but as far as go big or go home I think Limp Bizkit takes the cake, ya know?

So let's be real, as if Nu-Vember wasn't enough to clue you in I have a huge love for Nu-Metal. I do acknowledge that on the whole the genre is filled with bad bands, but there's one that's worse than some of the others, and I love them the most.
Limp Bizkit.
With their crazy frat bro energy, Limp Bizkit managed to rock the Nu-Metal world in the early 2000s. A lot of people had bad taste then as seen in this photo, so that really helped Limp Bizkit just hit the stage in a major way.
One thing you can't write off though is that they managed to make some 3 amazingly solid albums to kick off their career. The others weren't too bad, but the first 3 were better than they have any right to be. See, Limp Bizkit has some honestly fantastic talent in the group. The guitarist Wes Borland for example (The dude in the weird outfit) is straight up ingenius with what he comes up with. The sounds he makes his guitar make are just awesome.
Honestly if Fred hadn't started fighting with other bands they probably would have been doing much better in the main field. But hey, they (for the most part) make music they enjoy, and that's what counts. I love it, I jammed to this album for a few months when I finally picked it up.
If you watch this video, you'll see a mess of cameos from various music icons from the 2000s, so that's a fun little "where's Waldo" for ya.

So here's my controversial opinion of the day. Limp Bizkit was one of the best things to come ou of the 90s. There.
They stopped begin the best thing around 2003 ish, but till then I really do believe they were some of the most solid music happening. Their first 3 albums are just amazing.
I don't know why I like music that's generally bad, but I really do. Limp Bizkit will hold a space as one of my favorite bands either seriously or in a parody sense for many many years. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but at least I'm committed, right?

Eh, I'm almost over my Limp Bizkit kick now. I won't be posting any of their stuff for a while after this, but I did feel the need to share this one since we were talking about the 90s/2000s this last week.
This is probably my favorite song they've ever put out, mainly because of the high guitar lead in the beginning. All of the members of the band are actually really talented musicians, they just happened to choose a band that got a bad rep as people that didn't put out good music. It's a shame that their style took such a dive after their 3rd album, because they could have gone further if they hadn't made their fans dislike them so much.
New blog feature, the Album Spotlight! This is basically an album review, but for older releases that I missed originally, wasn't born yet, or that I just didn't have a blog at the time.
Yeah, I know, Limp Bizkit sucks. You know what though, I don't care. This album is really good in a lot of ways, from general musicianship, to the production quality, even down to the novelty factor.
Let's start out with the guests on the album. We've got the remix of Rollin' that's subtitled "Urban Assault Vehicle" featuring DMX, Redman, and Method Man. When I first heard this song I flat out hated it because of the way it's slower than the usual Rollin'. This wouldn't be an issue, but rather than retake any of Durst's lines, they just slowed them down to match what they needed which sounds really bad in a couple areas. If you listen all the way through though you'll see that it's a great song. The flow that the 3 rappers have is fantastic and 100% worth listening to the track for.
The other guest is Xzibit on the track Getcha Groove On. It's a very different sound from the rest of the album and very worth hearing just for Xzibit. I'm not familiar with his usual material yet, but he fits in this song like a glove.
Standout track wise it's got a couple really good ones. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the song Hot Dog since it has the dubious honor of saying f*ck a total of 48 times over the course of it's play time. It also lifted it choruses from a couple Nine Inch Nails songs, which is actually really cool.
Also you've gotta hit up the regular stuff like the singles My Way, My Generation, and Rollin'. There may have been some others, but I'm not familiar with the popularity of anything but these two. Both are good and catchy, but there's still other tacks that are as good or better.
Full Nelson reminds me of a Rage Against The Machine type song. Not too much actually sounds like it, but near the end when he mentions building an empire and some of the intro guitar stuff seems a bit like it.
Livin' It Up is a driving song that is a bad song to listen to while driving because it talks about living life in the fast lane. Maybe you aren't like me, but if a song talks about going fast I tend to drive faster. Unfortunate face about what I do I suppose.
I straight up love the bass line in The One. It's constant 16ths in the beginning sound really tight, and in general it's a generally enjoyable sound. It's smooth, it's got nice musical harmonies going on, and more importantly it's clean so I can put it on my work playlist.
Hold On sounds a lot like an Alice In Chains song, so I automatically like it a lot. The vocals are doing things that I didn't think Fred Durst was actually capable of, aka sounding good. Seriously, give it a listen and tell me that it's not really nice.
I've started to respect Limp Bizkit a lot more since I've started listening to them more. They've got a decent range on their earlier stuff (haven't listened to anything newer) and they're catchy as all crap.
This song for instance. It sounds just a little bit like it could be the chorus for an Alice In Chains song, or at least a bad like them. Ok, maybe not really. Still though, for the music that I'm familiar with this is a huge difference.
This album is all around great by the way. The song they did with Xzibit is fantastic.
I'm gonna preface this by saying I pure straight hater Limp Bizkit till about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Not for any reason really then the fact that they represented an unbridled amount of Douchebaggery and such. I was a music purist for a long time for reasons like this.
Seriously though, this guy.
I started liking them though, because I got into rapcore and these guys are, if anything, rapcore.
They got their name because the singer, Fred Durst (pictured) wanted a name that was as easy to say as "Led Zeppelin", other than that he was very not picky. Google the names they considered. They're horrible.
Coming in strong in the nu-metal/rapcore scene, these guys managed to alienate another band who was a major name with Durst's trash talk during one show. Talking about how all of Slipknot's fans were "a bunch of fat kids" he got a whole pile of their own fans ticked at him since he had a mountain of mutual fans. Basically, he's a moron.
Still though, their music can be kinda catchy, which is why I enjoy them at times.
Of course I would pick the one song that everybody knows to post though. Ah well.
