Vulgar Deli - In League With Satan

Band: The Vulgar Deli
Genre: Country / Western
Language: Some
Lyrical Themes: Satan

I feel like after this week it’s time to get things reeled back a little bit to the point of almost parody.  The last few days were a little...  Special.

Jeff came across this song last month and we both agreed it would be a great way to round out the week on a high note. This is a cover that I honestly never thought I’d hear. I mean really, and old school Venom song covered in this style? Nah man, no way this would happen.  Well I'm really glad I was wrong about that one.

Happy Halloween guys, hope you had a good month, here’s to November.

Watain - Reaping Death

Band:  Watain
Genre:  Black Metal
Language:  Strong

Hey hey, here we go, baddest band of the week.

I know you may be wondering how on earth we could step up from the literal bloodbath that was Gorgoroth.  Well the simple fact is that these guys are serious about what the preach.  And Watain douses people in blood too.

Gaahl of Gorgoroth for example isn't actually a full blown satanist, he just talks a big game; in his philosophy he is his own god and devil.

Watain formed initially because they were sick of people diluting the message of hate they felt Black Metal represented.  At the same time they hold a great deal of distaste to the National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) movement calling them a joke that is "unable to comprehend the perversion and insanity of Black Metal" by limiting themselves to Nazi philosophy.

To make this point clear to you, lemme tell you what the singer of the group believes.  Erik Dannielsson is under the firm belief that all the members of the band need to have the same belief system, that belief being Satanism.  Now there's a lot of different types of Satanism though, and most of them don't even believe in the Devil as a being, he's more of an ideology. (see LaVeyan Satanism 1 and 2)
But Watain want's to make sure you don't get the wrong impression of them. They are Devil Worshipers following the path of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order who are basically the group that you think of when you think of Satanists.  This is the group that actually kills goats and sometimes people.  Mostly it's just a cult, but just because a bad thing is small doesn't mean it's not still terrible.

But hey, getting a glimpse at nasty things is what Halloween is about, right?  Also that blood I mentioned earlier?  It's apparently a little difficult to pin down where they obtain it.  Rumor has it that they come by it by less than legal means (read: killing animals to harvest it), but it's not exactly provable.

The worst part is that I honestly really love how this song sounds, it's a really well written piece musically.  If only they didn't sing about murdering...  Everybody.  No, really, the lyric says Cain! Cain! By thy blade let all god's men be slain!  Charming.

Just in case I have any family or my boss from church reading this post I wanna clarify, I don't listen to these guys.  As good as they sound I have a fundamental opposition to their message, so don't worry, haha.

Cheers, tomorrow will be happier.

Gorgoroth - Carving A Giant

Band:  Gorgoroth
Genre:  Black Metal
Language:  Strong

So as we get closer and closer to Halloween I figure we can ramp up significantly more than the last few days.

Here is Gorgoroth.

Named after the mythology created by J.R.R. Tolkien, Gorgoroth is one of the hardest hitting Black Metal acts out there.  As far as this week goes they are one of the more "evil" bands we're gonna come across since they actually do terrible things on a regular basis.  Sure Varg of Burzum is a nasty racist piece of trash, but his hatred has managed to get him silenced some places and has banned him from freaking France.  Gorgoroth still tours all over the place with some of the most messed up stage shows I've seen.

This song is off of the last album released with vocalist Gaahl, who, if you follow the show, recently helped with the soundtrack for Vikings.  I don't watch it, I just happened to hear about it since it was news in the Metal community.

Music video wise these guys are a little intense.  I'll link it here, but due to the excessive content in the video I'm gonna let you check it out yourself if you feel like it.  It contains footage from a show that almost got them banned from Poland though.  Blood, actual sheep heads on spears, and 6 crucifictions to be exact.

Here's just the music, enjoy!

Burzum - Dunkelheit

Band:  Burzum
Genre:  Black Metal

Let's continue to move toward the big wigs in the Metal community with Varg Vikernes, sole member of Burzum.

One of the things people don't always catch about Black Metal musicians is that they aren't all into Satan.  A portion of them, Varg included, are strictly in it in an Anti Christian way from a Nordic perspective.   He doesn't believe in the devil so worshiping Satan isn't really his deal.

I'm gonna be honest, Varg is a guy I can't quite wrap my mind around.  I want to dislike hime because he has some rather intense opinions, but I can't fault the fact that he states his opinions in a rather compelling way.  Don't believe me that a racist Neo-Nazi could be convincing?  Check out his YouTube channel, he's very active, funny, and informative as to his opinions.

Don't get me wrong, I do not support his theology, I'm just letting you check him out.

The fact that he's managed to get past the point in his life that he brutally stabbed his bandmate to death is kinda nice; it's also nice that he's not burned down any more churches recently.  He is also banned from entering France due to the hate speech against literally anybody who isn't European, fun fact.

Is he Evil?  No, I don't think so.  However you can't deny that he's a bit of a weird dude.

He does make solid music though, so I can at least enjoy that aspect of what he does.

Mayhem - Chainsaw Gutsf*ck

Band:  Mayhem
Genre:  Black Metal
Language:  Strong

Let's step up the game now with some of the founding fathers of Black Metal, Mayhem.

Taking cues from the band Venom these guys decided to make the most extreme music they possibly could.  Congrats guys, you made Mayhem.

I'm gonna tell you a story about these guys.  Not gonna tell you about how their singer shot his face off, not gonna tell you about how their bassist stabbed their guitarist 23 times, nothing like that.

I'm gonna tell you about their interactions with a Jewish Black Metal band, Salem.

Salem was doing things that Euronymous, the guitarist, really enjoyed.  You know who didn't like them?  Varg, antisemitic church burning aryan hero.  Here's the gist of went down.

Mayhem:  Hey, you  guys are pretty great, too bad you're a bunch of jews.
Salem:  F*ck you
Mayhem:  *sends a bomb*

Here you go, a wonderfully trash song that hearkens to the early days of Black Metal.

Carach Angren - Sir John

Band:  Carach Angren
Genre:  Symphonic Black Metal

So as I said yesterday, not all Black Metal is about Satan.  Let's be real, a horrific story is much better than a gibberish pile of evil satanic things.

I have yet to find a band that's as amazing at telling chilling stories as Carach Angren is.  The first time I listened through the entirety of This Is No Fairytale I read the lyrics at the same time and, not gonna lie, the album put me in a very dark place.  The stories they manage to tell through their music are jaw dropping.

I wanna say I don't often give a 100% recommendation to a band, but this is a band that any horror fan really needs to check out.  Their narrative is gorgeous.

Please listen to this song while reading the lyrics to enjoy a short horror story from WWII, you won't regret it.

Immortal - All Shall Fall

Band:  Immortal
Genre:  Black Metal

Let's start out this week with a lightweight "evil" band, Immortal.

Realistically they actually aren't a dark outfit.  Their lyrics aren't really about Satan like most Black Metal bands, these are the guys that do the whole winter theme.  Sticking to a mostly weather theme these guys still manage to bring the punch expected by the genre.

They have some of the more recognizable corpse paint too.  Because of how basic it is it makes it look a lot like the makeup KISS used to wear.

Hollywood Undead - Gangsta Sexy

Band:  Hollywood Undead
Genre:  Rap Rock
Language:  Strong

So today is my brother's birthday!  Hooray, he's 21 now, big milestone, haha.

This song is one that we decided was his theme song a while ago.  It's not his traditional style of music, it's not a band that most people think of when they think of him, it's nothing like the stuff his band plays, the song is just basically about him.

I mean not really, it's not like he's into going out clubbing in suits and getting wasted, but this is his favorite HU album and on the album this is his favorite song.  This is also the only song that'll get him on the dancefloor at a wedding willingly, though we haven't managed to convince any of the DJs to put it on yet.

Happy birthday Jeff, don't do anything stupid till the weekend, haha

Halestorm - Bad Romance

Band:  Halestorm
Genre:  Hard Rock

I was like 100% sure I had posted these guys in the past, but apparently I haven't.  Unfortunately this means you get a cover as your into to them here but you can always check them out on your own time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I'm a sucker for great cover songs.  This one almost sounds like Lady Gaga is singing with them, which considering she's a fantastic vocalist I think we can agree that that's a rather good thing for Lzzy Hale.

So yo, Tuesday is the start of The Week Of Evil.  I've been working close with Jeff to find a pile of terrible music to "grace" your ears with.  It's gonna be fun, so be sure to tune in.  November 1st we will return to standard programing.

YG - #Grindmode

Artist:  YG feat. 2Chainz & Nipsey Hussle
Genre:  Rap, Hip Hop
Language:  Strong

I found this song back when I was going on my 2 Chainz binge and I figured now was a good time to let it surface to the rest of ya.

As I believe I've said in the past I do honestly realize that there's very few reasons for me to actually like 2 Chainz.  I really don't care for much of his solo stuff, but I do rather enjoy him on other people's tracks.

But this is a post about YG, and I'm really only familiar with one YG song outside of this, so that doesn't even help too much.  Ah well.

It's good though, so check it out.

Converge - Homewrecker

Band:  Converge
Genre:  Grindcore

Welcome to the music you didn't know you'd head before, Grindcore.

Now I know what you're thinking, "Noah, you're stupid; this can't possible be music, it's just trash."

Well I can't argue that a lot of this is just noise, but don't leave just yet.

There's a lot of aspects about Grindcore that's just a lot of noise.  Bands like Wormrot and Insect Warfare can be rather noise based with an emphasis on speed and whatnot, but there are a couple Grind acts that manage to swing having some rhythm to their sound as well.  Also most Grind bands keep their songs under 2 minutes which is really different.

Maybe not this Converge song, but they have a lot of elements like that in addition to Agoraphobic Nosebleed and others.  I'm posting this song cause I happen to be in love with it right now.

Now I'm sure you're waiting for me to get to the point I was making before about how you might not have known you've heard this style before.  Well it's actually kinda funny.

Movies.

Movies try to keep budget low when possible, right?  Well one really successful way of doing that is keeping the licensed music you use to a minimum.  Let's say you need a really specific sound to make people understand that the neighbor kid is a bad influence?  Well you need Metal music for that, good people don't listen to that trash, right?

Well nothing sounds more like trashy noise to people that don't listen to Metal quite in the same way that Grindcore does.  It has a chaotic sound to it that helps people immediately make assumptions.  And because I don't think I know of a single Grindcore band that get's legit attention their songs are usually cheap; hence movie's using them here and there.

Fun fact of the day for ya.  Also most Grind bands put on fantastic shows.  I saw Black Mask last year and it was a really good show.  They set up on the floor in front of the stage and where right in the middle of thinfs with everybody there.  Solid time.

50 Cent - In Da Club

Artist:  50 Cent
Genre:  Rap, Hip Hop
Language:  Strong

I feel like I always get stuck with themes.  Well we're gonna kill the weird weed theme I have going on so that we can get back to some sort of regular semblance of music.

Been a fan of 50 for the last few months now cause I was trying to move toward some of the old school rappers.  I'm kinda more leaning toward checking out Biggie more, but that doesn't mean 50 doesn't have a mountain of good music too, ya know?

I'm looking forward to getting toward a Top 10 Metal Vocalists list though, so you know that'll be lit.

Bongzilla - Grim Reefer

Band:  Bongzilla
Genre:  Stoner Metal, Sludge Metal

Want some deep lyrics? Wrong song.

Smell, Death in the air
Ahh, Super crystals everywhere
Hit, Wishin' for Death
Horrors, Floatin' round my head
Retribution, Gonna be Hell
Satan, Comin' oh well

This song is...  special.  I asked Jeff for recommendations of what to follow Cannabis Corpse with and he gave me this to keep with the Marijuana theme.  He keeps trying to get me to listen to stuff like this that he tells me about and I never get around to.  Well sorry Jeff, I don't have time for 10 minutes songs usually, aight?

But for real, who would listen to this stuff while stoned?  I feel like that's a bad trip waiting to happen.

Cannabis Corpse - Where The Kind Lives

Band:  Cannabis Corpse
Genre:  Death Metal

So you know what's even better than Cannibal Corpse?  A marijuana themed cover band, that's what.

Ok, maybe not better, but you can't honestly tell me that these dudes aren't rather funny.  I mean really, it's a weed themed Metal band, what's not to love?

The video is rather humorous as well, and musically you can kinda see that they took musical cues from Hammer Smashed Face.  I really dig it as a joke, and even as a serious thing it's not like it's bad.  Honestly I love parody and satire though, so I guess these guys fall right into that one.

Dream Theater - Caught In A Web

Band:  Dream Theater
Genre:  Progressive Metal

Ok, let's start this out with my trash talking and then we can wrap up with compliments.

Prog is the most pretentious form of music.  There are no Prog bands that aren't at least a little annoyingly pretentious.  That's not to say that individual members of the bands might not be ok, but as a whole they have that rep, aight?

Secondly, who the hell does this singer think he is just walking up and throwing down with the rest of these guys.  For real, he drives me crazy.  All of the musicians in the band are straight up fantastic and he's a base level good vocalist.  Maybe he contributes to the writing of the music, but I kinda feel like he doesn't.

Ok, that's all my complaints here.

Now let's talk about somebody who I feel doesn't get enough credit.  The bassist.

Everybody talks about Petrucci who is a god level guitarist.  In the Prog community you'd be hard pressed to not hear somebody talk about Jordan Rudess who can keep up with Petrucci, but on the keyboards.  What about freaking Mike Portnoy, the really annoyingly pretentious cause he's amazing drummer?  We all hear about them when everyone talks about the band.

But I never really hear about the bassist John Myung.  Now maybe I'm just out of the loop here, but I feel like a lot of people kinda overlook him.  He may not really take any solos in the band (in the songs I've heard at least) but he can keep up with 3 absolutely jaw dropping musicians without sounding like he's trying really hard.

Or maybe I'm way off mark, but this is always the impression I've gotten.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition

Artist:  Stevie Wonder
Genre:  Pop

Yo now, who doesn't like Stevie Wonder at least a little bit.  Dude's blind but plays the freaking keys like nobody's business.  For real, if you ever want to feel bad about how well you play music look no further than guys like this who really let nothing stop them.

Or you know, you could take it as inspiration.  That's not as fun, but it works better.

The Weeknd - Starboy

Artist:  The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk
Genre:  R&B
Language:  Strong

I'm rather happy with the new songs that The Weeknd has put out so far.  False Alarm is a cool deviation from what I would have expected, but since I'm going for a more reaching post here I'm gonna post the more popular song for now.

Hey, instead of talking about this though we're gonna talk about the last week of October.

Got a 2 year tradition going of having it be the "Week Of Evil" and I don't plan on changing anything anytime soon.

Long story short I'm willing to take some suggestions for it.  I've got a couple days still open that I haven't planned for yet, so fire away either in the comment section or on Facebook.

Cool, catch ya.

Adele - Rolling In The Deep

Artist:  Adele
Genre:  R&B

I've really been hating on Adele a lot recently, but I think I realized that it's mostly Hello that I'm really sick of.  Adele is a rather impressive vocalist, even if I think she's a little overrated.  I know, I know.  "Noah, don't judge other people like this.  You can't even sing like her, how can you say she's overrated!?"

Well I think people talk her up a lot more than she needs.  I like her music, but realistically it's way overhyped.

Artist:  Bruno Mars
Genre:  Pop, R&B

I hate this song.

I'm literally making this post just to declare my hatred for this song.

Don't get me wrong, Bruno Mars is a fantastic performer, I just hate this song.

Ok, continue with your life.

Sixx:A.M. - Life Is Beautiful

Band:  Sixx:A.M.
Genre:  Alternative Rock

Yo, I had a better band lined up but I decided to save them for some filler stuff so I can keep my good songs for when I need them later, ya dig?

Sixx:A.M. is Nikki Sixx's side project from Mötley Crüe, though if they're still touring I guess it's his main outfit now since Crüe has split.  Signed contracts so they can't come back and all that, haha

But yo, this is a perfect song to get your depressed emo self on with.  It's sad and all that.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings

Band:  The Smashing Pumpkins
Genre:  Grunge

Started closing at work recently and that lends to a whole new group of people to share music with.  I went from working from 6AM till like 3PM, to working like 2PM till 11:30PM which means I see almost none of the same people at all honestly.  It kinda sucks.

But ya know what, change is good, especially since it came with a promotion and such.

One of the guys wanted me to listen to The Smashing Pumpkins because even though he isn't about this kind of music anymore he knows I want new music all the time.

Well here ya go, the singer's voice is a little annoying, but I'm no stranger to slightly annoying vocalists, right?

Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' With

Group:  Wu-Tang Clan
Genre:  Rap
Language:  Strong

I'll admit I really don't know as much about Wu-Tang as I'd like to since I'm posting them, but I suppose that just kinda fits in with the week thus far, eh?

The dude that was playing Rammstein asked me if I ever listened to Wu-Tang.  I've only really listened to this album, but it was really solid in my opinion.  I saw a graph once that ranked rappers by unique word count and  it ranked Wu Tang as #2, #6, #7, #9, #20, and #23 out of 85 total.  That'a hella impressive.

Genre:  Nu-Metal
Language:  Strong

Well now I'm on a bit of a Nu-Metal kick that I can't get rid of because I'm not allowed to play it at work, so I'm gonna just shove it at you guys instead.

I mean, I know most of you aren't going to enjoy this song, but I feel like it's my job to shove music you might not like at you to make y'all expand your horizons.  Ok, that could just be me being pushy, but I enjoy doing it to people since I don't exactly do it often in real life.

Rammstein - Tier

Band:  Rammstein
Genre:  Industrial Metal

So firstly huge shoutout to Bobaflex if any of those dudes stick around for any other posts.  I posted their band yesterday and all the sudden I'm getting Facebook page likes and other such attention.  Turns out they liked my page and even took the time to comment here, so that's hella dope in my opinion.  \m/

Aight, this is a freaking 2 AM post though because, once again, I was enjoy the time my friend is back in town.  Had another dude with us tonight though who, while we were listening to all kinds of tunes, asked for some Rammstein.  I'm always down for that cause Rammstein is freaking awesome, so we started up with that.  He requested either this song or Bestrafe Mich, so we went with this one.  Pro tip, the other song is great as well, the whole album is wonderful.  You've probably heard the song Du Hast, which is also on the album.

But yeah man, good times.  Apologies for the shoddy quality posts, I'm just really freaking tired.  I'll be better tomorrow I think.

Bobaflex - Bury Me With My Guns

Band:  Bobaflex
Genre:  Nu-Metal, Alternative Metal

I'm writing this at 1 AM, so bear with me.

My friend Jordan is back from deployment in the Marines and it's pretty sweet doncha know.  Was over at a fire with him last night (which is why this post is sorta late ish) and as is his habit he showed me a couple songs.

When he asked if I knew who these guys were I said no, but since the name is clearly based off of Boba Fett from Star Wars I'm totally down with giving them a try, ya know?

Well turns out they aren't half bad.  They have this weird mix between Nu-Metal and some sort of Southern thing going down.  I kinda like it.
