The Showdown - Carry On Wayward Son

Band:  The Showdown
Song:  Carry On Wayward Son (cover)
Album:  Temptation Come My Way (200
Genre:  Southern Metal

This actually might have been the song that tipped me toward covers the most.  The Showdown was one of my favorite bands when I first was getting into Metal stuff because of how great their album Blood In The Gears was, so I bought all their other stuff too.  Worth it, still love it.

But this song right here, it's honestly a top shelf cover.  I didn't think of covers too highly until this one.  I think it might have also helped my parents tolerate my new music tastes too, but you never know.

The Showdown - The Crooked Path

Band:  The Showdown
Song:  The Crooked Path
Album:  Blood In The Gears (2010)
Genre:  Southern Metal

So I saw the new Thor movie last night.  It wasn't bad to be honest, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping for.  Maybe I just don't get as much out of it as other people, but that's ok I suppose.  The movie is still a blast for at least one viewing.

Cause of being out late with a movie though I decided to go back to one of my classic bands, one that I hope you enjoy as much as I did back in the day.

The Showdown - Achilles

Band:  The Showdown
Song:  Achilles (The Backbreaker)
Album:  Back Breaker
Genre:  Southern Metal

I really miss this band.  They broke up a few years back and I wish they would get back together.

But hey, at least I have 4 albums to listen to, right?  I never really listened to it as much as Blood In The Gears, but that doesn't make it bad at all.  The whole thing has a heavy greek mythology vibe to it that's kinda cool to read while you listen.

Bobaflex - I'm Glad You're Dead

Band:  Bobaflex
Song:  I'm Glad You're Dead
Album:  Charlatan Web
Genre:  Nu-Metal, Southern Metal

The last time I posted Bobaflex the band actually noticed and commented on the post.  That was freaking cool and actually boosted my views here for a long time.  Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

So I was gonna wait to post them again till I hit up a cover week since they recently did a cover of Hey You by Pink Floyd.  They knocked it out actually, really solidly done.  I opted to wait for more cover songs for a bit though so here's this one instead, yeah?

It's a really solid song that has all the grit and punch I really like about their music.  The whole thing just comes together in a really good way.  I dig it.

Side note, today is post #999, which is kinda a big deal.  Post 1000 is tomorrow and I'm kinda psyched about it.

Disciple - Underdog Fight Song

Band:  Disciple
Genre:  Southern Metal

I had really stopped listening to these guys a while ago because I got way too much of their music at once.  That's one thing that bugs me honestly, if I have access to too much music from an artist at once it's really hard for me to get into it, ya know?  When I started with these guys I wanna say they had a solid 5 albums, which was just a little too much for me to just start.

Well my brother started listening to them again on recommendation from the drummer in his band and, as this new album came out, he gave me a couple good tracks to check out.

You need to hear the scream at the end of this song, it's amazing.  He just holds it out for so long with it raising in pitch as it goes, it's fantastic.

Oh, and happy Valentine's Day.

The Showdown - Blood In The Gears

Band:  The Showdown
Genre:  Southern Metal

The Showdown was probably my favorite band for a little while back in 2010.  They had just released the album Blood In The Gears and it was at the time the best thing I had heard.  Turns out when they recorded the album they borrowed a couple of people from Demon Hunter.  Go figure, Demon Hunter was one of my favorites before I even knew it.

But yo, the vocalist for The Showdown is possibly one of my favorites for the Southern Metal style.  He's pretty smooth with his transitions between singing and screaming and his screaming is just good.  It's really perfectly suited for the style of music they play.  Sure, they have a bit of a Pantera fetish, but that works out reasonably well for the band.  It's a solid, crazy, southern style that you don't always find executed in a polished way.

The Showdown - Heavy Lies The Crown

Band:  The Showdown
Genre:  Southern Metal

Oh look, the band that I'm still really ticked that they broke up.

I'm even more annoyed since they were surprisingly active on Facebook a little while ago and I thought that they might be coming back, ya know?  I really loved their music

But hey, I still own their CDs so I can still listen to them all I want.  It's not ideal since I'm never going to get to see them live now, but it's still an option.  I'm trying to stick to the albums that my friend originally gave me way back when, and I already posted my all time favorites off of this album so you'll have to settle for second place today.

Only another threeish more days of the Matt throwback stuff.  After that we're gonna hit up the stuff that my parents gave me when I first started listening to music

A to Z Challenge: P is for Phil Anselmo

Hey look, Phil is wearing a Ghost B.C. shirt.  Cool.

Artist:  Philip H. Anselmo
Genre:  Thrash Metal, Southern Metal

Oh Phil.  You are the subject of so many jokes in the Metal community.

From his time to lead singer of Pantera, to his more recent spotlight of screaming "white power" at Dimebash this year, Philip H Anselmo is quite a character.

Honestly I like the guy.  He's brought about a rather funny selection of parodies into my life, his music is honestly pretty good, and without him there would be no equal to Scott Ian of Anthrax when it comes to being in all the Metal history videos.

The bands he's in are honestly really good though.  SuperJointRitual and Down are solid, and the plethora of other bands he's been involved in too.  He may be an asshole, but he's a really solid artist who does deserve some respect.  His voice has a freakishly impressive range that you can see in this video.  If you care to look up other stuff he's been in you can see his low range more, but this shows that not only can he do his screaming deal but he can also pull off some legit singing.

We are past the half way point by the way, cool, right?

The Showdown - Temptation Come My Way

Band:  The Showdown
Genre:  Southern Metal

As we continue on a list of bands I like and some that I forgot about, we shall touch on The Showdown.  These guys had some really solid potential back in the day, but they broke up.  I'm really bummed, but even on the last album they weren't able to get the full band together.  Half of the recording artists were Demon Hunter's current lineup because they were't able to get their own drummer or guitarist to commit.

I hold out hopes that they'll come back sometime because their Facebook page was active again recent;y, but who knows.

Texas Hippie Coalition - Pissed off and Mad About It

Band:  Texas Hippie Coalition
Genre:  Pantera Ripoff (Southern Metal)
Language:  Some, mild and strong

Now let me put this forward.  I NEVER tell you that you have to watch one of these videos, or even listen to the songs.  Never.

You MUST watch this.  Must.  No exceptions.

They sound like they're trying to be Pantera.  They sound like it so bad.

A to Z Challenge: M is for Maylene

No I kinda cheated here.  Maylene &The Sons Of Disaster technically have named each album I, II, III, and IV, so I can't use it for "M".  However one might also argue that this is a form of having a self titled album, so that's what I'm going with.

Maylene is a really interesting mix.  It's Southern Metal, but not.  It's got banjo, slide guitar, and all that kinda of stuff, so maybe you could call it Bluegrass Metal?  I don't know really.

It's a really cool sound though and I'd say you should check out the following tracks.

Waiting On My Deathbed
Last Train Coming
Step Up (I'm On It)
The Old Iron Hills
No Good Son

Lamb Of God - Walk With Me In Hell

I'm not sure what kind of music I should call these guys really.  On one hand I want to call them early Metalcore, cause they heavily influenced that, but I also kinda want to call them Southern Metal.  Eh, I suppose it's not really important, right?

So apparently most of the vocals on this album were recorded on a Shure SM58 mic without a pop filter.  This is a reasonably impressive feat I gather from all the metal vocal forums I looked at talking about it.

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster - Step Up (I'm On It)

Having also released 4 albums named I, II, III, and IV, these guys are a wonderful mix of banjo and metal.  Like, possibly the best thing ever if you think about it.

Looking the part, they have put out some pretty solid material over the years.  To be honest, I had forgotten about them till I wrote yesterdays post and had to write "southern metal" out like a million times, thus making me remember them.

Check them out, Spotify is a good way since it shows their top tracks right at the top.  And it's free, so that's a plus.

The Showdown - The Man Named Hell

Around the same time I got into Demon Hunter I got into The Showdown.

These guys have managed to make 4 albums, but then unfortunately have been in hiatus since their last release, "Blood In The Gears".

A Southern Metal band reminiscent of Pantera in their earlier work and finally falling into more of their own sound later on, they really aren't to bad if that's the kind of thing you're into.  I know I like it a lot, so obviously ya'll should get into it.  Tune in for tomorrows Southern Metal group that is even better than this!

Ironically, the main guitar riff sounds a lot like Pantera's song "Cowboys From Hell".
